Anybody know if the tapco hand guard will fit on the kraken?

Real AK handguards won't fit TM based AK's unless you do a lot of modification. Primarily filing down and around the fitment slots as they're smaller dimensions.

Hmm, that makes this build a bit tougher, lol. Anybody know a good source for TM compatible parts?

Why not just get some tactical handguards? Do they have to be the tapco style?

King Arms makes them, and i'm certain you can get ahold of some Tac Kraken handguards from someone off of the classifieds here.

This looks awesome. Gonna be a lot of work, but I think it'll be worth it.

Krakens are (usually) Cymas on the inside. You may need to take a dremel to a couple of places, you probably won't though.
The moorings in the for the screws in the trunnion may be off-center to the receiver's holes, which will necessitate about .5mm filing so you can firm up the frame without cocking the threads.

Realistically though (not trying to discourage) but why bother? I've seen these things die out of the box, and I've seen them just refuse to stop for years and years.
I'd leave it alone and love it as that retarded dog that can't sit, roll over, or fetch the right stick, but just won't leave your side. It's sad when he gets hit by a car, but you always knew it would happen and just made the best of your time together.

For a good project gun that won't beak the bank, Cymas can be had for low low prices these days and relative to what they cost, absolutely rock. They're also metal (lots of steel on some models) and occasionally you'll get one with a wood kit that's just gorgeous.

I already have it laying around though, so I'm not going to buy a new project gun when I have a perfectly good one available. If it eventually dies on me, then I'll look at building on a better platform. I figure the Kraken is good practice and most of the parts will be compatible to throw onto a better gun in the future.

Agreed. I think these are a great platform to start with, especially since they're relatively inexpensive.
If you're approaching this from a learning perspective primarily, you really can't lose!

Hang on to your extra parts, if you don't end up needing them someone else will.

So I started taking the kraken apart today. Was a little nervous, but I've been doing my best to keep the screws labeled so they can go back to where they belong. I think the toughest thing will be getting the selector switch back on properly. Everything else seems pretty straight forward.

Now since I am going for a tactical/modern style AK, I figure I won't need to get a metal body, I'm just going to paint the plastic one until I can find a decent priced metal one in country. If I was going classic with wood, I'd be going metal for sure.

Yes it is. I've bought mine for $80 of my brother and don't regret it. I've disassembled the entire gun and opened the gearbox without worrying much. Kraken is good for learning.

Just don't do like I've done: Element receiver is ubber crap as you have to do lot of work (dremel) to fit it with other parts. Don't hesitate paying over 100 bux.

Seconded! I went through the Kraken learning ritual four years ago and tried to fit an Element receiver. Ultimately I gave up on it.

Really, all those new to airsoft should be issued a Kraken and a screwdriver...

Looks like the plastic body is starting to break on me. Gonna put my build on hold until I can find a metal body.

I just got a Kraken a few days ago. Im starting to see why people like it so much. For the money its really hard to beat.
