Is airsoft sniping fun?

Im thinking about selling my CYMA ak47 and getting a sniper rifle. Im not really sure what model of sniper i want to get, so thats also why im asking this. I've been looking at some M14's, (Price range is around 350) and those seem to be pretty good. Im kinda tired of the ak, and i want something different.

I've heard people say both sides of it. Some people tell me to not do it, and others say go for it. Im looking for a different style of play, and something that a casual airsofter would enjoy.

So, is sniping worth the money?

Ross May 18th, 2011 18:53

It can be fun. And it can be very frustrating.

Tyrael May 18th, 2011 18:55

Yeah, i can imagen the boring part of it, and im pretty sure im fine with it.

I also realised its a hard question to answer, being subjective, but i thought i would ask anyway... Not being in this sport for very long.

Ross May 18th, 2011 18:57

I'd rather have a nice ranged dmr. Best of both worlds.

AngelusNex May 18th, 2011 18:58

sniping with a regular AEG with accuracy upgrades is Mega fun. I love sniping with my M16 + ghillie suit.

Janus May 18th, 2011 19:03

With proper upgrades you can turn an M14 into a wicked countersniper. Since you want an M14, start there.

koonz May 18th, 2011 19:33

im actually going from a m14 to a bolt rifle.. mainly cuz it gets physically awkward to shoot especially when lying down. I like the pistol grip and its easier on the wrist. i found that i was only shooting on semi anyways and with a bolt its much quieter and less weight to cart around

Tyrael May 18th, 2011 19:57

Thats a good point. Which bolt are you thinking about getting? Im not sure about any in my price range, but i can see what you mean about the clip for sure. Never thought about it

Sniping can be fun and can be really beneficial to the team. Especially in a defensive type situation. A good consistent BA rifle can do wonders. This past weekend we had 4 snipers on a team of 12 people doing mostly defensive maneouvers, and it was incredibly effective. They got 90% of our kills.

You should probably carry an AEG with you though, so that when you're on the move you can put down a reasonable volume of fire when you can't stop and do your sniper-thing. Also as a "holy shit he's right there!" weapon.

It depends, I rather enjoyed sneaking behind "enemy lines," shooting people in the back, and watching their reactions as they called friendly fire and what not. It's up to the person, I personally think you have to be a little gone in the head to be an effective sniper.

koonz May 18th, 2011 21:31

i just got a m93r which i figure is a pretty good sidearm as it can go semi 3 shot burst and full auto. i have a trusted friend who knows more about the world of airsoft to search out a decent bolt for me. i told him what i wanted.

There will be an Airsoft Snipers Clinic in the next two months. I am putting together the particulars for it very soon.

You will learn all you need to know if it will be for you or not.

You can snipe with a springer if you want. In my opinion sniping is more about getting a good hidding spot, than having a kick as rifle.

BoGrain May 18th, 2011 21:58

well it depends on your budget because a stock B.A. (like a TM VSR) will have the same range as a regular aeg; hence, you will find it very frustating when you get nailed by automatic fire; however, if you have the fund to upgrade your B.A. (expect a huge money pit) - you can have a solid platform giving you more fun and less frustration.

Overall a better option is to go with a DMR rifle using either M16, M14, G3, druganov SVD and alike - the upgrading cost are much more reasonable and you still have full auto capability (except for the SVD and psg-1).

Dingo May 18th, 2011 22:39

In the beginning it sucks, a lot. After awhile it gets to be alright and you start learning how to stalk, and how to pick hiding spots. Basically the longer you do it the better you get at it (same as everything). Ive been doing it for about 7 months now, and im getting better. Definitely going to want to upgrade your gun, and its coing to cost a lot. Like people already said, get a DMR unless you have bundles of money to upgrade a BA.

Tyrael May 18th, 2011 22:43

Yeah, its sounding pretty fun, i have to say.

I've been looking into making a ghillie suit, so that should be extra fun.

I've only used AEG's before, and i saw some of you mentioning springers. Are springers more consistent or something? Im not sure what the difference is.

PS That sniper clinic sounds pretty cool. PM me the details :)

Yeah, my price range is around 300 bucks. If my Ak sells, it'll be upwards of 400, but thats about it. Im just looking for something that wont give me more trouble than its worth :D

Steven May 18th, 2011 22:54

If your budget is 300, I wouldn't look at a sniper rifle. A fully upgraded rifle will run you upwards of 1,000 usually.

A stock TM VSR could work though... not sure about prices nowadays.

Tyrael May 18th, 2011 23:01

I've seen a few m14's for 300, but i was expecting it to be pricey.

Im fine with using AEG's with upgrades... just as long as im able to sneak around and all that fun stuff

E: That TM Vsr looks pretty damn good. I like that style

DJBackfire May 19th, 2011 00:02

I thought about becoming a sniper on my team but I ended up getting a G3 and converting it into a DMR style weapon. Long range and full auto for when the "shit hits the fan" I'm really enjoying it, but I also like weapons that are fairly uncommon.

ThunderCactus May 19th, 2011 03:44

It's really fun if your good at it lol
But are you looking for just a marksman rifle, or an actual purebreed bolt action rifle?

VooDooPeteK May 19th, 2011 05:37

It all what you make of it, I love my ba rifles and we have a bunch of guys that run ba's at our local games. Also depends on he type of games held where you play and you personal play style.

Im fine with any type. I just kinda wanted the classic sniper rifle style so i can prone and the mag wont get in the way. That was my biggest problem with my ak. I like to lay down and slowly push, and it turned into a real annoyance.

Yeah, understandable. Games are mostly forests and brush, hence the ghillie.
One of my friends also told me about a 2-day long milsim that i was curious about. I think that the sniper would be pretty valuable in one of those.

PS. Thank you guys for helping a noobie :)

ThunderCactus May 19th, 2011 13:04

You could get an M16 style DMR, like a SAMR, and just use the VN mags
It'll get you closer the the ground, but if you want accuracy and repeatability, you'll need a spring rifle
