Fox's 5 minute sniper rifle adaptation

Here I am again, stuck with a short time and budjet to adapt my rifle for a specific environement. My M700 is still black, unpainted. As a sniper, I must set asside the estetic factor and favor the functionnal side of things.

So, the Rawdon game is this weekend. It's a sand environement with large, beige grass hills. There is also an extensive wooded area.

A black rifle will clash with the environement. So a 4$ roll of masking tape save the day.

Step one: mask the whole rifle.
Step two: Humm, it will work if I stay in the sand dunes.

Step three: think. I'll probably spend a lot of time in the woods too, as our team is using green camo as base uniforme color and it's there that I'll be mostly operating.

Step four: Bring out the green tape.

It look silly

Better, but I'll probably end up taping the whole rifle green and painting it with the face cream to add dirt and shades.

After my ugly shape altering "rifle ghillie", I come up with this atrocity of a rifle camoflage. I think it look good enough.

And the final look

With added vegetation, it's going to be a perfect temporary paintjob/tapejob.

What do you guys think?

Renegade) July 10th, 2008 15:26

Yeah I agree, way easier then painting, I did this with my Sniper SPR in the winter, whiteish masking tape, covered it all in a couple layers, then used some plastic leafs and foilage from the dollar store with some OD paint and just gave it some light green to break up the solid white to blend with forest in winter.

Worked great, as that should for Rawdon.

I think it's great mate. As a sniper nobody will be looking at your rifle much (or else you're not doing your job well, now are you), and this seems like a quick way to make you that much more invisible. Doesn't require buying expensive (by comparison) paint, having to wait for it to dry, and then having to remove it after the game.

Thus - excellent choice. Function over looks will keep you alive.

Yannos July 10th, 2008 15:28

lol. good ideal as a last resort. you don't have a guillie for your sniper rifle ?

FOX_111 July 10th, 2008 15:30

Yes I do, I have a couple. But none is adapted do desert environement, as I play on this type of field only one or two time a year.

Silent_Angel July 10th, 2008 15:53

At first I thought WTF how could you!! But its growing on me, I like where there are area where the tape is thin and it shows a green tone, and complete desert tan area.

Great work, lets hope when you remove it it won't leave too much adhesive on the gun for you to remove.

It didnt for me, but if it does, just use some lighter fluid.

FOX_111 July 10th, 2008 16:20

I took the low adesive tape, to be sure. It's stated that it won't leave glue after 3 days of aplication. I plan on leaving it there for the whole month if not more. Like Renegate said, I'll use lighter fluid to remove the glue if any.

Next phase... more uglyness

http://aqar.no-ip.org:8080/M700_tape_desert_v.jpg
It look silly like this, so I used some face camo cream to dirty the tape and further break the shape.

Looks better. Now, I'm moving away from the desert theme. I think I'll juste completely green the rifle. The base tape is still very usefulll, if not mendatory, as the green tape has a nasty glue that will leave residue if sticked direcly on the rifle body.

Id love to see a finish picture :)

TokyoSeven July 10th, 2008 16:54

Cost effective, not as time consuming, and very innovative. Props to you!

A trip to a hobby shop or Canadian Tire for some spray cans in camo colors would have been easier and better. Now, that face camo cream on your rifle will rub off onto your gloves, clothes and equipement.

You still have time to spray paint.

But I don't want to commit yet. And I don't know wich pattern to chose from.

The camo cream is dry anough to handle. I know it will transfer to my gear, but I don't care. Clean gear is for brand new pictures. After that, it's experience marks hehe.

Renegade) July 10th, 2008 20:02

As I said man, just paint the tape... then you have yourself an effective, temporary, removable camo for the game enviroment.

AS so..

Not the neatest, but it works and I didnt care since t wasnt permanent..

FOX_111 July 10th, 2008 20:11

Yup, I could paint over the green tape, since it's not water repellant like the beige one.

Muffin July 10th, 2008 20:13

Well done man, very creative.

CDN_Stalker July 10th, 2008 20:15

Awesome, easier to spot than a black rifle. :D

Here you go. Covered the essencial. With added vegetation, it's going to be a killer camo.
I had trouble replicating the actual green of the tape. I shoot in RAW format in my camera, so all the color balance is done manually now. Anyway, it's close to the real thing.

Still, I want to paint it in a permanent manner after both Rawdon and Levis Games.

Renegade) July 10th, 2008 21:26

That looks pretty freakin awesome Fox... not bad at all, but I will wait till the end of the game and see how neat it looks then :)

BTW dont think ive met ya formally yet, Stalker will have to introduce us for sure.

Cheers.

Derek

Well done Fox. I see someone used the Brits way of camming up a sniper rifle eh?

You might want to invest in a roll of sniper tape though :D
