Magpul PTS PDR AEG

So this was just posted on Magpul PTS' facebook page.
Caption: "Watch Out! It's coming soon..."

Notable features:
* Bullpup design - mechbox is apparently a variant of the v2 instead of the version 6 and sits at the rear of the AEG (should be relatively straightforward to work on; Parts availability should also be more abundant)
* Takes M4 mags
* Quick-disasembly and quick-change spring gearbox
* Functional bolt release and remote mag release

Yes I'm aware that it was announced at ShotShow2012 with a then-release timeframe of July.
Methinks this should hit store shelves around September.

Thoughts?

Looks pretty damn ugly but it's a Magpul so folks will buy it in droves.

Stealthee August 10th, 2012 12:39

I've been waiting for this. Sexy!

Drake August 10th, 2012 12:51

No gas, no interest.

PrIeSt August 10th, 2012 13:29

V2 with quick change? Um... Maybe more along the lines of the Masada gearbox?
No one likes the v2 stop using it damnit

Oops my bad. Mechbox looks to be proprietary.

Something to note is the routing of the BBs. Note that the mag sits right BELOW the mechbox. I'm assuming they've come up with some sort of BB channel similar to the ASG ASW338LM. Odd.

Well hopefully they were smart enough to match components to the masada, other wise yet another new mchbox. sigh

Dynamo August 10th, 2012 14:15

it is indeed a new gearbox .. by none other than Ares..(sigh) when they say V2, they mean the upper half of the gearbox, just like the ACR. also expect that retarded switch from Ares.

@Drake, why do you think i want to pick one up? ;)
once i get mine, im selling the gearbox.. i know it's going to be something people are going to want/need.

once its filthy guts are all stripped out, im gona try and design a gas system for it. you have to admit if this thing came as a GBBR, it would be damn sexy. i would rather have a gas PDR over the MP7.

is this thing real or just fantasy ( I mean is there a real steel version )

ap27 August 10th, 2012 14:31

I believe the RS project is shelved at the moment

Magpul did design a real steel version of the PDR to sell to the US Army but the military wasn't interested in a compact PDW weapon. As a result Magpul PTS inherited the concept and is now turning it out as an airsoft toy.

I suspect that the PDR will be a "love / hate" AEG much like the P90. To me the PDR has the benefits of a compact form factor like a P90 but can use standard M4 mags which is a huge advantage. It is interesting to note in the early reviews that the inner barrel of the PDR is about as long as a typical airsoft M4 inner barrel.

the only love/hate i can see happening with the PDR will be due to its internals.
it's a real shame MAGPUL stopped the development.. would make a nice home defense weapon (for countries that allow that). would be great as a backup secondary on hunting trips. getting charged by a moose would suck if all you have is a bolt action. and if it could be chambered for 6.8mm grendel (pants now have cream filling).

Brian McIlmoyle August 10th, 2012 14:45

Shame, that with an 18.5 inch barrel would be non restricted in Canada ( presuming a semi only receiver).. I expect 18.5 would only poke out another 3 inches or so.

so it's a fantasy gun for now

lurkingknight August 10th, 2012 14:52

quite honestly I would probably buy one, I generally like uncommon, modern, unique looking guns.

drk242 August 10th, 2012 15:04

handled this at the shot show was great runs on m4 mags and is a bullpup. full length barrel like the aug as it is a bull pup.
