Chronographs

So I left my Xcortech in my car overnight (it wasn't even below zero) and now its dead, it won't turn on. Now I need to buy a new chronograph or I'll become Bakasaur's apprentice.

What's the go to chronograph nowadays? One that won't take a shit on you if you decide to leave it in your car overnight with all your other gear.

I have left my Xcortech out in the real cold numerous times, it even spent days in the rain and it is fine.

Have you tried new batteries or other troubleshooting?

As far as I know, Xcortech is still the go to chrono, its the most popular one I have seen around.

I've tried batteries, but I don't know what else I can do to troubleshoot a chronograph. What troubleshooting methods did you have in mind?

Cobrajr122 February 20th, 2014 12:52

I have never opened one, but I would start there. Look for any obvious damage, if you have a DMM and some electronics damage, follow the path that power should be taking from the batteries.

mine was also left in my car for around a month... maybe more through -20 cold snaps and it turned on without problems.

Have you warmed it up inside for a few hours and changed the batteries?

I had an IR temp gun not work after it came inside, showing miscalibrated temps but a day later it was working fine.

I brought the thing inside last night and went to check my RoF after doing some stuff to my SR16 this morning and it wouldn't turn on. I guess I'll have to take the thing apart when I have time next week =S

It's possible there was water damage from condensation if you tried to use it immediately without letting it warm up/dry out.

Hit the chronograph a few times, dumped it in the car for a 2 hour drive and now it works. Don't know why, but I'm not going to complain.

If I have to guess, soldering on the board inside cracked/popped off, and contact was re-established with a lucky impact. It'll fail again eventually, but "eventually" may be in a really long time.

Chromey February 24th, 2014 20:47

If all else fails Again. Grab the board, Toss it in the Oven for 5 mins at 400.

All joints on the board will connect again.
