Motor Height/Grip Problem
 

Hey all,

I just recently bought a WE M4 AEG, and changed the stock pistol grip to a Magpul MOE grip. The motor just barely fit in, requiring the adjustment screw to be fully unscrewed in order for it to fire. The base plate was the only thing holding the motor down. It fired fine in auto and semi, but with a higher pitch normally associated with the motor height being too high.

I then decided maybe I could lower it by checking if there was a wire pinched or something. I put it back together and then it made grinding sounds no matter how far the motor was adjusted. It would either not work at all when the motor was too high, or when it was lowered it would just grind or barely cycle. After playing with the motor adjustment screw and shifting the wires back around, I had no luck.

I then installed the stock grip back on it, but the exact same problem happened. Before I changed the grip it worked perfectly fine, but now with the stock grip on it I am getting the same problem. I don't know much about working on AEG's, and I'm probably gonna bring it to a gun doc, but I thought I'd ask here for help before I go do that.

Did it have a motor plate on before that you could have misplaced? That adds a few extra mm of space to push the motor in farther.

I had a similar problem with a few LCT aks. What would happen is the motor would not turn the gears. You could loosen the adjustment screw but for some odd reason firing the gun would cause the motor height screw to tighten itself until the motor would stop from being too far in the grip!

Problem solved by removing the height adjustment screw altogether. I know this probably doesnt help but its nice to know others have shared the same frustration!

the moe grip shouldn't need the little round tab found in some grip plates. Something else is wrong, maybe a wire is being pinched. Screwed all the way in on the moe baseplate would mean your pinion gear is mashed into the bevel, either way, it's not right.

Make sure the end bell of the motor is siting properly in the base plate of the grip. Sometimes they don't fit well in MOE grips.

did you run both wires to the back or one on each side of the motor?

I ran both wires towards the back of the grip. The end bell fits fine into the baseplate.

I found that with some MOE style grips, maybe they were clone or gen 1 grips, the motor would always seat far too high even with the grip adjustment screw backed out. I had to loosen the two base plate screws until motor height was correct.

NO. NO NO NO NO NO. You shouldn't be taking parts out of the gun because you can't figure out why they don't work. It is impossible for the motor screw to tighten itself from firing. What is happening is the pistol grip screw is pushing the motor screw higher because they both thread into the bottom of the motor cage. Now put the motor adjustment screw back in and find a shorter grip screw!

This is because the threaded collar in which the height plug threads into is blocking the motor from sitting at the true bottomed out position. You need to bore out some of the threads to make room for the motor to sit lower.
