G3 SG1 as LMG ?

Hi guys,

I have a TM G3 SG1. I just found that some drums are sold for it (Hero Arms) They are quite cheap , around 80-90$ shiped but i heard A&K makes better drums. Anyways, im wondering if the G3 with a drum can be considered as LMG?

I already have a RAS handle guard with a metal bipod (removed the stock plastic bipod). I played vegas 2 and there is indeed a similar gun called the HK21 (based g3 but being a machine gun)

Can i be a support with this gun with a drum?? To be a LMG , it needs a bipod obviously, long barrel , drum and what else? Thank you.

i thought the G3 came stock with a bipod?

Ayashifx55 September 29th, 2009 00:09

the one i bought did not =( .... the stock bipod cost 60-70$ shipped ... So i decided to get both RAS handguard and a standard bipod instead lol. So i'm guessing i can use it as LMG?

correct me if i'm wrong but the G3 uses a V1 gearbox so i don't think it will be a trigger happy gun. it's more of a support weapon. If you really like LMGs though, by all means. do it as you wish =)

generally, the fact a gun has a carry handle, bipod or other accessories, does not make it a LMG. The real G3-SG1 is not considered an LMG. The HK 21, though based on the G3 platform, is considered a LMG.

The major fuction that defines an LMG from a regular rifle is the ability to maintain sustained fire. This is usually noted by heavy barrels with quick change ability and large heatsinks or other methods of heat transfer.

IMO, in order for a gun to fall under LMG rules, it must replicate an existing real steel LMG, thus the g3sg1 is not an LMG.

PS: the g3 uses v3 gearbox. its fine for long full auto use. the only v1 gearbox is the FAMAS, which is a workhorse and great on full auto. Ive owned both the g3sg1 and the FAMAS, and i prefer the latter.

the G3 uses a v2

The only gun that uses a V1 is the FAMAS

so in summary , no support LMG for me? =(

Not necessarily. The V2 is the most commonly used mechbox. It is used by all M4/M16 (Armalite) variants and almost all MP5.

Well, that depends entirely on how autentic you want to be. If you are aiming for realism and authenticity as your main goal, then maybe not. But if you just want a skirmish gun that you like, and you find fun, then go for it.

Believe me, my G&P M249 uses a V2 mechbox and its a fucking TANK
The G3 and HK21 are too different to allow for any easy visual comparison mods (for example you want to make an MG36, just throw a bipod, C-mag and stock on there and your done).
So if your me, you go and find an LMG that your G3 looks like, like the HK11E!
It's effectively an HK21 that uses the 20 round magazines. So that's one major issue down. Next problem is having to make an HK21 front end... like this one found on my old G3SG1:

Hadn't gotten around to making the bipod, barrel lug or front sight yet. Either way it was just a prototype and turned out to be really heavy considering the whole front end is supported by 2 pot metal gussets. It weighed in at about 13lbs or so....
It was built in college without any CNC equipment so I blame my inexperience at the time and the lack of proper tooling lol

i smell an interest on a group buy for custom G3 front ends =) gun's looking real sexy!

I guess you could slap on a drum mag on it and call it an LMG however some games will ban it since others have actually taken the time to do a conversion and it's not really fair to them if you can just slap on a drum mag and call your gun an LMG.

+1 to L473ncy...

Just because I've got a G3SG1 with Cmag doesn't mean it's an LMG. The 249 on the other hand is. Because that's it's designed purpose. I've also got a box mag for my 416. Never used it, but I've still got it. It doesn't make it an LMG either.

AKs could fall into the same category....

If you're only using 1 midcap you're absolutely useless to your team..
