You dont by all the mags at once either... that would cost a pretty penny... I slowly bought mags since I bought my M4 a year ago and just a month ago Ifinally bought my final one....

get mags by the case (12). share the discounted cost with a buddy or three to keep the over all cost to you down.
yeah 8+1 is a typical load for me too even though my rig is capable of 12+1. I sometimes pack a couple buddy mags in upside down, open top shingles on the back of my rig. it helps to slightly balance the weight of my rig but remains accessible to myself as well as team mates. so really it's 10+1+2
