Two Deans connectors plugged into each other occupy about the same amount of space as one half of a small tamiya connector. Regarding the fusebox, you can snap the two fuse holder contacts together and either heatshrink or tape to cover up. At least that way if you want to put the fusebox back in, the contacts are still there.
