Did you try fiddling with the pin connector.? Some time's on the Wouxun they need to be pressed in really good. try holding it in while you try to transmit.

I was also looking up J-pole antenna's and mite be able to custom make some 1 meter blade antenna's with 1-1/2 foot cord for the Wouxun once I pick up an SWR meter.
