Most NV today are paired with an IR emitter, which is what makes people very visible to NVs, but most Gen 1/Gen 1+ don't work particularly well with IR. Generation is based on the tubes used to filter the light through, the better the generation the better it is at filtering out noise and providing clarity, also the older the tube the more moon/ambient light needed to see well. Gen 1 in a really dark environment equals blind.
