Actually this advise is dead wrong. Both the police and the civil courts will view your concern with more credibility if you give the other party a reasonable time to pay/rectify before trotting off to complain to the courts. It makes you look reasonable and it makes your opposition look like they are dishonest but not replying.
Just be careful not to miss the civil limitation period which in ontario is two years.
Also be cautious where you get your legal advice.
