I think the shoulder straps cross in the back and then you just clip it around your back

Put the top straps through the metal D rings on the sides in a cross fashion. Is that really hard to figure out just by looking at it?

I do that and it just goes loose and falls back out (obviously) theres nothing to keep the friction, I looped the one on the right to the D ring on the left and then looped the strap into those little leather things on the strap, it holds but it doesnt look right, it seams it'd be too weak. I pull on the strap and it starts to slip out.

is this right?

Anyone who actually has a chicom can offer advice or a pic on how the straps loop in?

What do I do with the side straps?

Thats correct, thats how you do it, if the straps slip out, just put the extra strap through the leather keeper again.

The two straps on the sides are to tie them behind your back.

Might wanna try tieing a knot if it keeps coming loose.

If you have the time/means. Try making a double D-ring setup and putting the strap back onto itself.... (Like if you know in rock climbing you have the buckle you put the strap through and tie it back onto itself, it's called "doubling back" the strap or something like that....)

That's the best thing I can think of, I haven't used a chicom rig so I don't really know any solutions other than applying one from something I do know (rock climbing).

GUN TAPE!!!! Although I doubt the NVA/VC had access to gun tape back in those days unless coming across it in small supplies from kill prizes or looting.
