AK74 selector switch issue.
I have a bit of a problem with the selector switch on my 74.
It's become VERY loose. I know the typical remedy is simply screw it tightly, I've tried that, and it hasn't done anything to solve the problem. The selector switch is so loose I literally wiggle it a little and it'll slip right off. Are the screw threadings gone to shit? Any ideas?

if it falls off with a little wiggle then yes, the threading on the arm on the mechbox (part screw goes into) has stripped.

I can see the threads have gone to shit just looking at the pic.
Unfortunately those are part of the mechbox shell, which means you need a replacement shell, unless you wanna try some hack repair (like locktite-ing the screw in place)

Could try using a tap set to make new threads?
Not sure if you'd have to take apart the whole mechbox to do it or just as is. Might be worth a shot.

Problem is he'd have to use a slightly larger screw, and the screw has to fit through that shaft in the center of the selector arm mechanism.
To do it right he'd have to fill in the hole with epoxy putty or JBweld or something, then drill and re-tap it to the original size.

Either that or a really small helicoil.

um, isn't that arm separate from the mechbox shell?? Pretty sure it can simply be replaced. though it's been awhile since i took apart an AK.

The arm mechanism is separate but the threaded hole the screw goes into is in the mechbox shell itself
which screws into the hole immediately below and aft of the cylinder opening
