Upgraded my TM M14, should I worry?

So thanks to all those who helped me find an M14 Disassembly guide. Our gun tech would have been lost without it.

I am mostly posting this as an informational post of our experience putting the following upgrades into my TM M14.

So our gun tech and I were talking it over about what I should put into my M14. We wanted to stay around the 350ish fps mark because we did not want to stress the stock gears.

We chose the following Items:

Classic Army Reinforced Piston
Classic Army 6mm Oily Steel Bushing
Systema Silicon Piston Head with Bearing for All
Prometheus Non-Liner Spring MS100

Before the upgrade it was shooting 290 fps with .20's. With that spring we figured that it would put out around 350ish with .20's.

Well. We were wrong.

With the above parts it is now putting out ~404 fps. with .20's.

Now I did read on some reviews that there was room for improvement in the air seal area of the M14, but we did not think it would make quite that much of an improvement.

We actually used the original O-ring that came with the Marui cause it made a better seal than the new O-ring that came with the piston head.

I am using an 8.4V 2400 Mah Ni-Cd Battery. After the upgrade the rate of fire did not seem to suffer at all as a result of the stronger spring. Our chrono indicated 12 bb's per second as to 13 bb's per second before the upgrade.

This alone more than anything seems to indicate that the piston head made most of the difference? True? False?

Now that, I have all that out of the way. Should I be concerned?

Does the longer barrel of the m14 make that much of a difference?

Is the prometheus spring that much stronger?

Is it the better air seal of the new piston head?

Or is it a bit of all of the above.

Mostly Should I be worried about the future of my gears?

Or is this a mild upgrade as we first thought?

Thanks everybody for your thoughts on this.

I do think you've hit the nail on the head when it comes to upgrading the M14 - the airseal.

I left my piston/pistonhead assembly completely stock in my M14, and with a prometheus ms120 I'm only clocking around 410 right now. Obviously there is room for a huge improvement in the stock marui parts, and I'll be ordering replacements next time i'm browsing WGC. Thanks for the post!

Hmm well I am running mostly upgraded parts in one gun and only hitting 385 with the prometheus 110.

the other m14 running a ms120 is at 435 FPS though.

Also I noted no discernable drop in ROF. Still cranking out BB's at 435 FPS with 8.4v as well.

I think its two fold. I find the Prometheus springs turn over easier then other springs and also the gear ratio on the m14.

both guns have expensive pistons and heads.
All on stock gears for some time.

Well my M14 was upgraded fully with Prometheus and guarder spring guide ! Spring was a MS110. We did get a very stable 395 FPS on stock gear with 8.4V 3600 battery.

I had a game very my M14 was shoting over 420 with the same upgrade !, the hop up was broken, so with the Hop up at zero you will reach 20-25 fps more !

Check your hop up, maybe it's on Zero or broke !

So what would you suggest to get a stock TM M14 up to about 350 or so? I've left mine stock so far but i wouldn't mind getting a little bit extra out of it. I've heard that the mech box is pretty tough, would you suggest any other internal upgrades other than a "light" upgraded spring?

How have your upgrades held up so far? I'm thinking of doing something similar, but without the upgraded piston.

Thanks
