The air volume you need to get that kind of range is way more than a propane or CO2 bottle could sustain. And we HAVE used it in combat, the relatively slow charging time isn't so significant when you can suppress targets 650 feet away

Didn't we empty a case of 200 rounds in 3 minutes when we had the compressor?
Ours was fairly consistent, light weight and field serviceable.
That last bit is the key. I've used a number of airsoft gadgets that break after 2-3 shots or get a round stuck in the barrel and you need nothing short of a grinder and a welding torch to fix it.
Huff it out to the middle of the field, lob 3 shots and huff it back.
