G&G M14 upgrade.
Hello everyone!
First post on these forums, though I have been browsing them for years as a guest, and although the site contains an absolutely ridiculous amount of useful information, I still have a few specific questions unanswered which I hope you can all help me with today! So, as the title briefly states, I'm upgrading my G&G M14 and am looking for around 500 FPS with .2's; it's currently at 380 with .25's. After looking at a few other threads on this forum and talking around my local Airsoft community my wish list looks like this: *Prometheus EG Hard Gear Set Max http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=22399 *Systema Magnum Motor (Short Type) http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=21302 *Prometheus EG Spring Guide w. Smoother v.3 http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=21364 *7mm oil less bushings *Tight bore barrel *New hop up? *Mosfet switch *Spring *Air Seal nozzel? So, a few questions from me, which I hope you can help with: *Do brand names matter when it comes to spring guides? Prometheus, Guarder, Systema - is one really better than the other? *Do brand names matter when it comes to bushings? *Which brand inner diameter tight bore should I go for, and I have heard that at 6.03mm and below the hop up stops working (the stock is a 6.04 barrel)? *If the above is correct, will buying a new hop up unit solve the loss of the stock hop up at 6.03, allowing me to go tighter? *If the above is correct again, is it worth it getting a new hop up unit for the gun, I have read that it uses an aug style hop up, but are there any recommended brand names, or specific types of hop up I should be looking for, like 1 or 2 tipped? *What power spring would I need for that type of FPS, and is there any clear brand winner in that department, or at least brands to steer clear of? *Would I need an Air seal nozzel for it, I'm not even 100% sure as to what it is, but are there any parts that people would recommend to reduce air loss and therefore increase power, or at least consistency. I don't really know if I would need to upgrade the cylinder and cylinder head at that sort of FPS range, but in any case I can't for the life of me find out how long the cylinder is, and similarly I have been told by G&G that the cylinder head is 100% unique, and there are no after market parts for it. This is turning into a long first post, but I'll keep going! With my current AEG it's all stock and although I get good distance on .25's it's lacking accuracy, BB's splay left and right more often than they do go dead straight, is this because of the barrel, the hop up or something else I'm overlooking? So, lots of questions and a fair bit of cash - that's why I want to get it right first time, all of you G&G M14 experts out there, fire away! Looking forward to replies! |

Since I have a highly tuned TM m14 socom ill try to help you out
*Do brand names matter when it comes to spring guides? Prometheus, Guarder, Systema - is one really better than the other? --Not really as long as its ball bearing *Do brand names matter when it comes to bushings? --Just get steel ones that are 6mm and you'll be fine make sure there bushings not bearings *Which brand inner diameter tight bore should I go for, and I have heard that at 6.03mm and below the hop up stops working (the stock is a 6.04 barrel)? --Stock barrel is 6.05mm i believe, so 6.03mm works quite well. My tightbore is 6.02 by damage and it works perfectly with the hopup, Im using a KM RH75 hopup rubber *If the above is correct, will buying a new hop up unit solve the loss of the stock hop up at 6.03, allowing me to go tighter? --You should definitely buy a new hopup sleeve if you want to goto around 500fps *If the above is correct again, is it worth it getting a new hop up unit for the gun, I have read that it uses an aug style hop up, but are there any recommended brand names, or specific types of hop up I should be looking for, like 1 or 2 tipped? --You dont need a new hopup unit just a better hopup rubber, You can get 2 tipped I used the Vcut KM RH75 and it works well by stablizing my bb's in the air with no dramatic left or right bb's *What power spring would I need for that type of FPS, and is there any clear brand winner in that department, or at least brands to steer clear of? --For brand springs Modify would work great, im guessing a M140 or M130 would work wonders for you..Or an airsoft surgeon stage 4 but that'd push you a little over 500fps. Stay clear of Systema brand springs, there prone to breaking. *Would I need an Air seal nozzel for it, I'm not even 100% sure as to what it is, but are there any parts that people would recommend to reduce air loss and therefore increase power, or at least consistency. --Air nozzle is a must or else your FPS will vary a lot, I'd go with promethus. That itself has raised my FPS by atleast 10-20 since it produces a much better seal on the cylinder head I don't really know if I would need to upgrade the cylinder and cylinder head at that sort of FPS range, but in any case I can't for the life of me find out how long the cylinder is, and similarly I have been told by G&G that the cylinder head is 100% unique, and there are no after market parts for it. --You probably wont need a cylinder head, just get a Sorbo Dampener from Tirador or airsoftparts.ca that'll work great and save your gearbox from breaking at high FPS This is turning into a long first post, but I'll keep going! With my current AEG it's all stock and although I get good distance on .25's it's lacking accuracy, BB's splay left and right more often than they do go dead straight, is this because of the barrel, the hop up or something else I'm overlooking? --The far left and right spray is caused by either the nub is in your hopup is pushing on one side to much or the hopup rubber itself isnt centered. Or if your using low grade bb's |

Thanks for your reply Nova, it was super helpful!
So, based on what you have said, plus a little more reading, plus just some blind picking I have gone for the following list, any thoughts or opinions? Prometheus Gears: http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=22399 Systema Magnum Motor: http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=21302 Prometheus Spring Guide: http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=21364 Bushings: I am not 100% sure if G&G are 6mm or 7mm so I got both. Systema 6mm: http://www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwol...l?prodID=22772 King Arms 7mm: http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...8_srch_bushing Prometheus Tight bore Barrel: Couldn't find anything tighter than a 6.03 anywhere that delivers to the UK, any idea's or advice? http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...-500_srch_6.03 KM RH75 Hopup: As per your recommendation Nova http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...100N_srch_rh75 Extreme-fire SW-Evolution Mosfet: http://extreme-fire.com/SW-EVOLUTION.html Prometheus Air Seal Nozzel: again, you're recommendation. http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...rch_air%20seal Spring: it's a very cheap spring, only $8 is it the one you mentioned Nova? http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...urgeon%20Parts Now is there anything critical that I'm missing out? I couldn't find those Sorbo dampeners anywhere that delivers to england, how important is it, and are there any other brand names, or do you know if places like uncompany, wgcshop, redwolfairsoft etc do them? - I can't find em But, Sorbo dampeners aside, think this thing will pack a punch and not split itself in two? To the extend of my knowledge (which I'll admit is highly limited) it looks pretty sound, but anyone out there with some advice as to other parts or components I may have overlooked? Thanks again! |

What are your plans for piston and piston head?

Thanks for raising that Saint.
Well, the gears come with a piston, by the looks of it is a poly-carb one and should be up to the job, unless anyone has experience to the contrary? And the piston head - I guess I over looked it, and to be honest I have no idea what type I would want, at a total stab in the dark I would say v3 but I can't be sure and G&G are woefully unhelpful when it comes to ... well anything about their products. None of their blow up pictures give dimensions or specifications, neither does their web site. I have also emailed them but to no avail. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding piston heads, suitable materials, recommended brands and most importantly, any definitive knowledge as to what type/version to get? |

Double post but:
I have the KM RH75 hop up rubber chamber, I assume I need the actual hop up rubber too? or does it come with it? |

Here's more info on the sorbothane cushion, you can contact the original poster for help.
http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthr...hlight=Tirador I'd say if you can, get an aluminum piston head. I'd personally be more worried about a polycarb piston head breaking at 500fps than a G&G M14 mechbox failing. My prefered brands are Modify and Prometheus. As for hopup, what you've ordered is the hopup rubber sleeve and nub. The hopup chamber = hopup unit = came with the gun itself.

Okay cool.
I have been tinkering (read: breaking) my gearbox since I got back from work. Getting inside there and having a good old look around helped a lot, I intend to take out the cylinder head, piston head, stop latch & air nozzel and take them to my local airsoft retailer, with the hope that they can categorically tell me what version components I need. From the looks of it, the prometheus air nozzel for an M14 isn't the one I'm after, from WGCshop pictures, it appears to be the AUG version. The cylinder head (which G&G have told me is 100% unique) doesn't look anything remarkable, and I doubt it's unique, but I can't specifically match it to anything as pictures only do so much. oh, and I finally managed to get the measurement of the cylinder, it's 72mm for any future G&G M14 owners who were in the same situation as me and hadn't got a clue :P |

You got the wrong gearset
U need a V7 gearset http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...etheus%20Parts The set u got are for version 2 and 3 Everything looks good minus your Gearset since its the wrong version The Airsoft surgeon stage 4 will put u at 500fps or very very close to 500fps Thats the setup i run but i have clamped 2 of the rear coils together and blowtorched them to make me shoot 470fps For piston Im using a systema piston head (durcan i think it is) and a deepfire piston You may also want to get the Promethus Aero head to produce a better seal between the cylinder head and nozzle Then your pretty much completely upgraded haha OHHHH YAH U need one of these http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...E0732_srch_M14 Or i did in my TM since that wore down insanely fast after my upgrades ~500 shots and I started to shoot burst/full auto Last edited by Nova316; July 31st, 2008 at 02:42.. |

Thanks for your advice thus far Nova!
The gearset I have is for v2 / v3 gearboxes, and that's the gearset that a G&G M14 uses, I'm 100% confident on that one. I intend to get a new cylinder head and piston head too, I just need to find out what versions to get, should know by tomorrow. I'll look into the cut off lever, but obviously it'll be different for a G&G M14 so I'll have to dig one out. What exactly does a cut off lever do anyway, just so I know? |
