Yes, anime characters inside a mechbox is very serious problem.
You should get that looked at. |

Doesn't look cut out to me and the slots 'are' the piston guides.

Maybe he means the way the spring is all snaked up and the piston is at half stroke?
I will guess Ares or SRC.

Looks like a KWA M4 to me (probably wrong) . The guide rails are cut, but why? The only thing that's kinda keeping the piston align is the sector gear. I predict lots of worn pistons for that gun.
Also, if the purpose is to reduce contact for the piston, it would be better to remove the guide rails from the piston instead.

now that I'm at a computer with a larger screen, it does kid of look cut. I can't see why anyone would go through the trouble of doing that though.

To me it looks like a bolt mod. You cut this opening, add a small part that gets caught by the piston dragging back the fake bolt that will slam back in when the piston cycles back.
Look for the thompson bolt mod on youtube. Pretty sure it's it.

Not an Ares M4 that I know of...
Mine has the sides still there. My friend has a JG with a mechbox just like that, well I think it was a JG.

What kind of gun is it (brand)? Is it brand new or are you a second/third/fourth owner etc?
