first r-hop-up install

This is my first r-hop install.
I am not a gun tech so this a not a ''how-to-do post'' but a documentation of the many mistake I am about to make...

So, I chose the blue ''patch'' that mostly fit on the window of my madbull barell and cut down the excess length.

first question: it seem to fit tightly in the window, is it too tight?

I am gone glue on side tomorrow morning, the other side on Mondays

Couple things:

Should be perfectly flush inside and out, as thundercactus said.

A lot of people like to cut it just a hair shorter than the window to make sure it doesn't pinch at the front. If it feels like you have to push it into the window, definitely shorten it.

Use CA (super/krazy glue), glue both sides at once, it will be dry in like 2 minutes and ready to go into the gun. Don't glue without testing first, no point ruining the patch.

install done, tanks for the advice.
I sand a little bit on the ''front'' of the patch now it is flush with about a .5mm play. Also sand the outside.
At first try bb would not event go out of the gun, I sand it more and now it feel better (I also found out why the gun was so bad, brand new bucking but no nub...).
Insted of glu I used lock tigh red.
Can't wait to field it to check the gain.

loctite is not glue, it's loctite. It's sole purpose is for binding metal to metal, not silicone rubber to metal.

The length is too long, and you should be using the install tool to sand the outside so it's flush, as TC said.

Stealh, that's what I did (and you are right, I would have really struggle without the tool)
TunderCactus, the locktight is just until I can really test it (I cant test home, have to wait for the field...)

you don't need anything on it to test it.. it will stay in place for a few dozen rounds.

super gluing it now will not ruin the patch, as long as you don't get any in the bore of the barrel or on the BB contact surface of the patch.

the glue will bond the patch to the barrel but if it ever comes off the glue stays on the barrel side, not the patch side so all you need to do is scrape it out of the window.

I use a permatex glue that comes in a tiny purple tube.. it's more gelatinous so you can mush it around with a toothpick a lot easier.

Noob question:What is the purpose of gluing the patch to the barrel? I ask because I have my first R-hop install in progress as well. I did not glue the patch to the barrel but instead just sealed the sides with a little gasket maker leaving the leading and trailing edges free.

After reading a lot of material on airsofttmechanics I chose this approach ad I did not want to risk getting CA glue in the bore.

if it's not glued it can potentially fall into the barrel or shift side to side

they do tend to shift around in the hop up as more rounds go through the gun. The mnub in my p90 ended up smushed all in the front end of the window causing my overhop last year at nightfall.

Having the patch glued down to prevent any sort of shifting is insurance.

I would think that over time the BBs passing through the patch eventually smushed it forward.
it still worked really well... you can ask the folks I was shooting through doors and windows at nightfall how well it still worked lol.

At about 60m it started to take off for the moon even set at 0 where it previously worked fine. The awesome thing was that even shooting at the moon it would hit the exact same spot every time.

I see - thanks very much for the explanation. I now have a little re-working to do on my R-hop. I will use gel type CA glue though as it tends to migrate [into unwanted areas] much less.

Damn right it worked really well... my whole team has ptsd-sim because of it.
