Some thing this crazy inventor I use to live by in Northern Ontario created, keeps Mosquitos and Black Flies at bay, and a single coating works all day (10+ hours). Not sure what he puts in it, but smells kinda like strawberries...
I think Canadian Tire is carrying it now, not sure whats its called exactely, but was being sold in a clear greenish bottle and goes on kinda oily at first. |

Definitely something to keep in mind. Personally, after ruining a few reels on fishing expeditions, I smartened up, and put latex gloves on first, applied the DEET, took the latex gloves off, then just usually dealt with my hands not being covered in mosquito repellant.

I find my trick, and they really love my blood for some reason, is to not shave or shower the day i play. The scent from deoderants and shampoo's and all that stuff attracts them like crazy. Now i don't know about you guys but i can put up with smelling for the day lol. But if it really comes down to it, deep woods...although my dad told me about some stuff he got and it smells like lemon, really strong smell, and they don't touch him (he swears by it now). PM me if your interested lol, i'll see if i can find out the name.

I don't know if spraying silicone oil on your gun will repel DEET.

You could always put on your bug goop and let it evaporate before you put on all of your gear. |

Weird as it sounds, last time I was at my aunt's cottage, she told me and a buddy to just rub sheets of Bounce on our arms and legs, and then keep a few in our pockets. The cottage is right in the woods, on a lake, and it was the middle of summer, with mosquitoes everywhere, and neither of us got a bite. I don't expect it'd work as long as something with DEET in it, but it worked fine for us for 2-3 hours at a time.

consuming a lot of vitamine E also help. You have to take a lot, so your body will excrete it in your sweat. Mosquito don't like the smell of vitamine E or something. It's not harmfull to you nor make you smell bad.
That's what I read in my biology books.

can you buy just vitamin e? like specific pills... \
I also agree that not showering or using deoderant when you play and put mud on yourself and your set...

Mosquitos go for CO2 which as you know is what you breath out. The invention some one metioned before looks like a little light with a C02 tank connected to it , it releases the CO2 slowly to attract the Mosquitos in to a little dome that traps them in there..and they die. They sell for alot of money and have about a 25 foot radius.

Catnip oil is said to be a good alternative to DEET. you can find at heathfood stores and through Naturalpaths. Of course there's always the internet.
