I like the idea of surveyor tape. What I saw is that it is often tacked to a tree. Perhaps going in with a portable nail gun, and just tacking a piece would work.

As for the tape, it's the best option.
We had deer constantly chewing through the property line markers where I used to paintball.
Best option would be to mark several trees individually where the line is clearly defined and crossing it would only be considered blatant "cheating".

High visibility paint works wonders too, two orange and two yellow horizontal alternating stripes is pretty unmistakable too.
