Herringbone gears eliminate the sideload as they behave like two opposing helicals merged together. Their resulting sideloads counter each other so they exert no net force on their bearings. For airsoft, this is overkill. Our bearings can handle the sideloads generated. It does mean that we have to shim in a way that assures no contact between the gear sides.
Helicals do have higher load capacities (more than 1 tooth engaged when rotating), but they also have higher rotating losses (more teeth wiping).

herringbone would be sweet but the teeth would be less than 1mm wide. I was thinking about it and i cant figure out how hellicals would be weeker. they have been using them in cars since car first had transmision and thats everything from you 50hp Austin mini to a 1000hp Supra

Some helical gears only use half tooth pistons and good shimming is really important. I'm selling mine if anyone is interested. I have a video and pictures available and they still use full tooth pistons. I also have a shim guide which should give you a good starting point.

Shimming really isn't that hard...
The Systema gears will save you about 30-40 bucks.. |

Thanks for the input Amos but for the sake of reliability and without taking note of the price; wouldn't that gearset and some bearing bushing be quite good for a gearbox?

Modify modular gear set. You can get them for standard, high speed, or high torque.

Crunchmeister; I have a reinforced gearbox so I don't think it would work.
Can you however point me somewhere where they sell it? I couldn't find em on UNC and WGC.
