What about VA's new guns whos bodies can take a beating from a hammer? Might be a cheaper route to go if you're planning on swapping out the internals.

their armalites (M4/M16/AR-15) are probably their weakest models.

For an armalite, i would vote CA or G&P

Both have great externals, and very respectable internals

Also just out of curiosity. Since it is illegal to import black/metal receivers, how does the people on this forum have access to those parts? (I don't care as to how they do it) But I just want to make sure that the method was legal, and the parts are genuine, not made in someone's garage.

Not sure how much I'm allowed to tell you about that, but for the most part, everything is legally brought over the border. There are a few liscenses that allow people to import full metal airsoft. However, these liscenses are extremely hard to get ahold of. And as for my 2 cents on weapon choice, I've gotta agree with theguy, a CA or G&P is the way to go. Amazing externals, pretty good internals, and a fairly wide selection of guns to choose from. Once your AVed, there's a couple retailers who carry CA.

Don't ask, don't tell.

In other words don't worry about it, the less you know the better you're off in case the SHTF.

For all you know these guns came in country before 1998 (as to the 2008 PTW's and Real Sword guns.... they're "pre-release prototypes" that were also imported before 1998).

Also TM internals aren't better than aftermarket parts (they're good don't get me wrong but it's like having a stock car vs having the same stock car but with aftermarket parts stock parts were made for the masses aftermarket parts like aftermarket CAI's, Headers, and catbacks were made for performance) but the fitment is whats key. Tight tolerances, and precise fitment.

You can race a Civic any day but you're not going to win any races any time soon. It's great for a daily driver/weekend warrior thing but if you want to win races you'll have to invest in aftermarket parts.

Also with the barrel wobble issue you can easily fix that (locktite, or replacing with a one piece barrel or even a floating barrel). Just check out the barrel wobble FAQ in the aptly named FAQ section.

Get age verified, get familiar with the classifieds, the retailer section and the want ads....and you'll be ok in the end.

At this point...you've got all the info you need (i.e. guys that ask over and over...and ask every little thing at nauseum...look like tits)

billi, with airsoft being as gray as it is already, its hard enough for retailers to get their guns in or to even have the ability to sell them without attracting attention from the layman who doesn't know any better. That being said, it is entirely a legitimate sale, but again, to the layman who doesn't know any better...
So even with AV'tion, for us newbies, its just a bit better to know a bit less. I'm fine with it, as long as the retailer has reputation on here-just because there are people who come on here with far more experience and years than I do, so I trust them.

As for guns questions: I agree with most of the views: Get AV'ed, then go on classifieds and take a look and maybe post a want ad to see what you can come up with. CA is a great choice for starter, but I too am a University student, and I don't have that much money. If you're looking to game, expect to spend up to $1000 on gear and gun. That's a general amount, but the gun itself will cost about half of that value. The rest is for goggles, clothing, vests, boots, gloves, etc.

Now for my own opinion; I too am starting out, and being my budget tighter, I'd rather spend a little bit less (sacrificing best quality) than spending (as latency well put it) all of my tuition. If I can't find anything on the classifieds, I'm going with Velocity Arms' custom line-their HK416. It's pre-upgraded and comes as a basic starter kit that doesn't break the bank. But if you can afford it, of course TM/CA real steel ones are a better starter.

I guess you are right. I would be fine with it as long it's legal and legit. I started with airsoft two years ago, had an entrance level AEG, It was made out of plastic, so everytime I use it, I feel like baby sitting (Sorry, I stole this term from another poster on the forum) it rather than using a "real" gun. Which sorta takes the realism away. So then I decided that I want the realism and the greens are worth it.

Speaking of which,
1. How study are the full metal AEGs? (I really don't want to baby sit it, but really want to use it)
2. Are the position of snipers useful at all?

Rock solid rifles can be found in the classifieds as they have been pre-upgraded. stick with something with a V.3 mechbox for tru headache free playing (they are more durable than v.2 mechbox) such as the AK series or G36 series.

For stock guns, the following are rock solid performers:

TM SOCOM M4 EBB (full metal too)
TM Type 89
TM P90
TM M14
(pretty much ANY TM is a rock solid, stock performer, but the ones i listed already have metal where metal should be on the real guns. the rest of TM's line, while good, is ABS plastic)

VFC 416 (or just anything by VFC for that matter)

I was browsing through the Airsoft Canada > Discussion > Airsoft Media > M4/M16 Thread and it occurred to me, would it be better if I build a gun from custom parts, or stick with a working out of box gun?

Now, sure you can go the $1,000 route and buy a bunch of stuff.

Or, you can do it on a smaller scale.

Good rifles $200-400
mags $50-100 (In theory, you could use a hicap for awile)
Vest $30-100
Good pair of boots $30-150
Combats $40-60

If you wanted to be really cheap, and just do something basic starting out (which I did)
rifle $200-400
Good pair of boots $30-150
combats $30

I just ran with a hicap for awhile, then upgraded later on down the road to midcaps.

Now this all depends where you shop and what you are looking for. But for starting out, there are some pretty cheap options.
