Cylinder Question

Before I even ask, yes, I did read the whole cylinder thread explaining why you should match your cylinder, but I'm not a mechbox junkie quite yet, and couldn't make a judgement for this question based on it.

From what I know, you should always match your cylinder if you're increasing your barrel. When I upgraded from a 247mm to a 455mm, I made sure to switch from a Type2 to a Type0 cylinder. From what I understand, you get some less than desirable results with a Type2 cylinder with a 455mm barrel, so I've come to the conclusion that when you increase your barrel, match the cylinder.

My question, then, is can you reduce the length of your barrel and keep the cylinder, or do you have to replace the cylinder again? IE: For CQC style games, I plan to take out my 455mm barrel and put my 247mm barrel back in, when I do that, should I replace the cylinder to the type2 again? I'm just not sure if you should match the cylinder both ways, or if you should only match it upon increasing your barrel's length.

Thanks again, ASC.

some guys switch their cylinder when they reduce their barrel length because it picks up the rate of fire a little bit and cuz of the shorter barrel length it reduces the fps alittle bit too. Sometimes this makes or brakes the fps lmit for the indoor field, as a TB barrel can add 15fps or so. You always want to match the barrel to the cylinder when you increase your barrel length.

hope this helps..

You should swap back down to the ported cylinder. If you use the full cylinder with a shorter barrel, the piston head will slam into the cylinder head every shot. This is because, since the barrel is shorter, the BB will have already left the barrel before the piston has made it to the forward position, at the cylinder head. The barrel will be empty while the piston is still moving forward, so all of a sudden there will be no resistance within the barrel, and the piston will be able to travel quicker, and will slam into the cylinder head.

Essentially, not swapping to the ported cylinder can cause unnecessary wear on your gearbox. You are better off swapping it out. That is one of the main reasons you are supposed to match cylinder volume to barrel volume.

All correct. You CAN just swap out the barrel if you want...but like was said it may have more wear on your mechbox and not be an efficient use of air and/or lower your FPS (1/3 of the air that was supposed to help propel the BB comes out after the BB has left **just using 1/3 as an arbitrary number**).

For example when I had a regular AUG length barrel and a shorty barrel that I could swap out, I didn't change cylinders and it worked just fine.

In short cylinder to inner barrel ratio should match. If you are going long 455mm then either type 1 or 0 cylinder. For short 247mm type 3 cylinder.
