FPS Measuring

I was curious how they check your gun at games. For instance, most outdoor games are limited to 400 fps and most indoor is limited to 350 fps. So my question is, using what ammo? Is it always measured with .20g or do they measure it with what you personally are going to be using during the game?

I only ask because i just realised how much of a difference each bb makes on the velocity.

Just because its the standard doesn't mean its the law. Most places yes, some places let you shoot hotter. Some people don't game them, just plink. Some people are trusted with the higher FPS. Most people that shoot hotter than 400 FPS though don't always understand that the accuracy is diminished as opposed to 375ish FPS, especially with lower weight BBs and an inability to operate the hopup/have a crappy hopup.

Some fields allow you to have guns up to 425 FPS but put restrictions such as semi only on your AEG.

Some players are trusted with BA (Bolt Action) rifles that can shoot upwards of 450 FPS with .20's. However there are strict engagement distances to be maintained at all times and players running a hot BA rifle must have a sidearm for closer engagements.

Note that if you must chrono under 400 FPS with .20's. You can also chrono with .25's but you must shoot lower than something like 360 FPS (I don't think that's the real number I'm just making it up but just to get an idea), basically at 360 FPS on .25's the same amount of energy is applied to a .20 at 400 FPS. It's not the speed of the gun you're firing it's actually the amount of energy applied to the BB, think of it in those terms and you're golden.

Like other said, for example in Saskatchewan the limits for outdoor are 425 fps for AEG's and 475 fps for semi auto sniper rifles.

But since thats part guess work, a chrony station should have .20s available, or state that you MUST chrony with .20s

Most often think that higher veloity means extra range/effective distance, when it really doesn't at all. A lot of newer players shoot for 400fps as a arget, not taking into account that velocities can vary from day to day and air/temp conditions, so they are risking not being allowed to play in order to feel good about being able to match better players simply because they think all the great players run 400fps guns and that is why the great players are great.

I'll say this, I'm a level 3 certified sniper in Canada, instructor status as well, and am rated safe up to 600fps in some game places, and have tried out all kinds of velocities with heavy BBs. Why have I been using my M24 rifle all year set at 397fps with 0.20g? Because it's the best I've ever had that rifle shoot. And at that velocity with 0.20g, I use 0.36g BBs all the time in my rifle, even knowing they are flying out the muzzle at ~300fps. My field MP5SD is set up at 370fps and works great, much better than it did close to 400fps last year. Nutshell, brains will always outdo upgrades.

Yep, and that comes with time.

The biggest thing you'll learn (regarding your thread) FPS is not everything.
