what you think is good and any insight on how you change an m16 from its original handguards to an aftermarket rail system would be great too

I personally have a Socom Gear Daniel Defence Lite 7" rail. I had a bitch of a time putting it on at first, but I think thats because I'm a moron and not design flaw. Now thats its on its very strudy and rigged. They also make a 9" version. There are clones of it for about $60.

He said M16.
A 7" or 9" rail is for an M4 length gun.

I personally went for the Madbull Noveske 12.658" rail and it's hot stuff. I of course have it on an M4 but it would be a perfect fit for an M16.

Start with the hand guard: depending on what you have you should just be able to pull the delta ring towards the receiver and pop it off, with my previous G&G RIS and Magpul MOE hand guard they both came off the same. I removed the bottom first then the top.

The flash hider: you will need to remove it to remove the front sight post, depends on what you have but for my G&G it was just glued a bit and for my CA there was a hex screw, both of which needed to be removed by turning clockwise.

The front sight post: on my G&G there was 2 pins that needed to be tapped out, on my CA there was just a hex screw on the bottom.

The delta ring: you should get an armorer's wrench, I got the NC star one as it has a lot of options for wrenching, just turn counter clockwise and if you're lucky it will be a one piece unlike the G&G cansoft ones =/.

Installation: Now you need to put the barrel nut on, I hand tightened it as much as I could then I put one of the screws into it and tightened it with the armorer's wrench so the top rails aligned perfect, I suggest putting the screw closer to the receiver so you can see where the rail will line up without having to remove the screw each time.

As for the rail once you have it lined up all you need to do is slide it on and screw in the 6 screws.

Something to note: I would suggest getting a Madbull upper receiver at least as my CA was not flush with the top of the rail (it sat a bit higher than the Noveske rail), as well it was very difficult to get the correct clocking, once I got the Madbull receiver everything was magical.

I think that's about all, anything else, ask away.
