Painting a gun Difference between matte and satin clear coat
Hello i just recently painted my sniper rifle and im looking at putting on a clear coat to help give it a bit of protection. I checked all over the city im in and they only have a Satin or gloss finish and gloss is defiantly out of the question.
Does anyone have a picture comparison between matte or flat VS. Satin clear coat finishes? I have been google searching for quite a while now and have come up with a few things but nothing that is helping me out that much. thanks

Satin is semi gloss. Should be ok
Buy a can and try it on something other than your airsoft? I used that for my airsoft and its not to shiny http://www.krylon.com/products/make_..._clear_sealer/ My old scar finished with 2 coats of the above Same 2 coats

Semi-gloss is still gloss. It'll reflect under the right conditions.
Go to a model / hobby shop and look for flat clear coat for model painting...usually Tamya. |

Rusto makes a matte clear coat:
http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=164 Not sure where to find it though..... You may have to order off the internet or something rather than finding it locally but any place that stocks Rusto might be able to special order it for you or something.

Krylon makes a Matt finish clear coat. I bought mines from Curry's Art Store.

Better protection than Tamiya but you need an airbrush to apply and dry-cure slower...

If you are going for a hobby paint, lacquers such as Mr. Color will be the most durable compared to Tamiya acrylic or Testors enamels.

Try a furniture place for matte clear lacquer. You can also rub with a scotchbrite pad while it's tacky to make the finish duller.
Do a lot of practice before you do this, and make sure this that what you're using is safe for what you're painting.

You can get a non reflective coating using semi gloss if you 10 or so really quick passes from about 18" away. you may not get complete coverage, but it will protect the majority of your paint job and allow wear with use to show up. Just make sure that you allow between 20 to 30 minutes between passes.

well i bought the satin stuff tried it out and i'm still not to sure if i want that much shine on my sniper rifle.
Just wondering what would the finish look like if i did not use a spray on clear coat but one where i have to brush it on? I think i could get some flat or matte clear coat of that here. How would be the best way to apply it where i would not get brush marks or streaks? Here is my gun that I'm painting

Another trick is to buy a can of krylon cammo tan (or green) and spray it from a good distance like 2 feet.
The goal is to ''fume'' your rifle. Take care not to cover the paint... I myself use diluted buff color from Tamya and spray it with an airbrush. It will blend the color a little and leave a matte coat that will wear of over time.
