TM SR 16 Makeover
This gun was my first purchase, I bought it from Daves Surplus about 3 years ago and I have put around 30,000 rounds through it. It had a gearbox fracture and I replaced it with a Deep Fire shell, Damageinc (Mark) did some minor upgrades and the gearbox is now solid as a rock. Here is a pic of it before the makeover as well as the gearbox fracture.
I kept the stock plastic body until now and my father and I pitched in to get some parts to fix it up. We replaced the body with a full aluminum receiver from G&P (Vltor style) as well as the stock (again Vltor). The AEG received a one piece aluminum outer barrel before I bought it so there was no need for an upgrade there. As far as internals go I didn't mess with the gearbox because Mark did a fantastic job putting it together so I just put together the metal hop-up unit with a Prometheus 363mm stainless inner barrel. The AEG now shoots flawlessly between 350 and 360 FPS with great accuracy. Here are some pictures which will show the damage which regular use can cause to a plastic receiver. I highly recommend buying full metal, this shows that in the long run you will have to replace plastic. Putting the aluminum body together was a fairly straightforward task that has paid off. Mark installed these improvised tabs so I could use the plastic body with the stock tabs broken. This gun was my introduction to the hobby and I am very happy that I have been able to restore it to its current state! The only other plans I have for this Vltor M4 is to rewire the gearbox with new wires to the rear, maybe a electronic MOFSET.The furniture will also get a paintjob soon.
