SOLUTION:

Wrapping electrical tape around the hop up unit like MaciekA suggested and then jamming the bastard into the receiver (making sure that the unit still worked, of course). It's now shooting very consistently.

Any ideas for a more permanent, less ghetto solution?

Ahh man, I'm so happy that worked out for you, but yeah, I don't yet have any better ideas --- yet... I wish I hung out with more real gun doctors in person to find out what all their embarrassing secrets are... This feels like one of mine.

On some American forums, I've seen some similar tricks that involve using sealant tape around the inner barrel itself before putting the bucking on (like really thin pieces), but usually it seems to me that those guys are improving existing already-good setups, not fixing problems. Also, I tried that trick and ended up tearing a brand new Guarder clear, so, tread carefully.

Like yourself I hope we figure out less ghetto ways to improve seal.

Guarder clears are garbage now anyway. They used to be good, but now they're way too fragile.

The gun ended up shitting the bed at the game today anyway. Gonna have to open the gearbox again.

guarder clear's are still really good for stock guns, you just can't use them above 350fps or you chew through it in one game

I haven't experience any of the issues that's been going around regarding the Guarder Clear (maybe I'm still getting the old batch). But try using the Guarder black and see how that performs. For good airseal, I've had good experience with systema (< 380 fps), and Modify (>400 fps). Give those a try if the Guarder ones are still f'ing up.
