Painting Textured Plastic
Hey guys,
I'm planning to paint my FAMAS AEG, because I'm starting to despise the clear-smoked colour. However, the plastic has this kind of matte, grained texture and I was wondering if paint would cover that up. It feels really delicious, and I don't want to lose the cool texture. Are there paints that can circumvent this? Also, does anyone have a colour scheme they think would look nice on a FAMAS? All your help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

You could use a vinyl & fabric dye, it will stain the plastic. I used Dupli-Color flat black on a Glock tinted frame and it turned out really well after a few coats.

Hm. Haven't heard that technique before. Does it rub off, or will it hold up to sustained wear and usage?

This is the first time I've tried it, but I believe it should be fairly permanent as it goes into the surface as opposed to sitting on the surface like paint does.

Paint it from the inside?

paint from the inside is an option, as well, there are some guys here in manitoba who use truck box liner on their guns, gives them lots of texture.

That's brilliant. Except on some surfaces, I can't do it from the 'inside', per say, because both sides are exposed. I guess I'll sacrifice a bit of texture on those edges, as I don't have dye and I can't seem to find it locally.

Just hit it with Krylon ultra flat black. Use light dusting coats and let it dry between sessions. You won't lose much texture if you don't cake the paint on.

beat me to it, krylon paint (most) melts into the plastic so it doesnt come off easy. no-mater what paint you go with as long as its in thin coats you shouldent loose to much texture.
