Lets talk hop-up
Hi all I am currently running one of these http://www.ebairsoft.com/high-tech-7...er-p-3495.html and frankly i'm not thrilled with it.
Now somebody out there has found a real good set up and is dying to tell us about it. (or just tell me about it via PM). Something that shoots real far and doesn't jam up or shoot two bb's at once. What about the madbull ultimate hop up , is it worth trying? This is the upgrades discussion thread and I would like to hear what you think. |

I've only had consistent success with 2 hop-up units: the G&P and Modify unit.
I like the G&P because I run a ton of G&P guns and they're easy to put together and troubleshoot. The inner bore of the hop-up unit is larger than some other hop units so it can accommodate a larger variety of barrels/rubbers, but it may require some shimming with teflon tape to get a good seal. I find this situation ideal - better than too tight and ripping a bunch of rubbers getting it to fit. The only things it needs is a small washer on the wheel's screw and maybe a better barrel stabilizer ring (depending on which inner barrel you use) The Modify unit is a bit finicky but once you have it setup, it's pretty solid. My big gripe about the Modify unit is that the difference between a perfectly flat trajectory and BBs going sky-high is about 0.01 degrees of rotation on the wheel. Also, for some magical reason, with a 100% perfect seal on both setups, the Modify unit gave me 15fps LESS than the same G&P setup. Weird. The unit alone is not solely responsible for your issues, what about your rubber? Here are some combos that have netted me some very good results 1) Modify unit with PDI W-Hold hop-up rubber and Madbull tightbore barrel - wrapped dental floss around rubber and insert into unit. My fps deviation was +/- 0.5fps, no, not a typo. I'd use this setup more, but the rubbers are retardedly fragile and they cost something like $15 CAD per rubber to your door. 2) G&P hop-up unit with Lonex 70 degree rubber, R-hopped stock brass barrel. I think I just wrapped the rubber with some teflon tape. I got the same range with this setup @ 350fps as my 460fps DMR with some other setup. 3) Prometheus hop-up unit (for V3 AK) with Madbull red rubbers and x-type spacer and Madbull Tightbore. Simple insert and go. For some reason, the unit would apply just the right amount of hop for .28g BBs with hop-up set to 0. *shrug* 4) Firefly nub in G&P unit with KWA 2GX bucking - finicky as hell due to the 4 mini-nubs that make up the traditional mound. Rotation adjustment is key but like any awesome hop-up system, once you have it dialed in, it gives boners. Honestly with any of the setups above it'll take you some time to adjust and install everything correctly. After all, if a chimp can do it, what advantage would your gun have over some noob who just bought a brand new 400fps G&P gun? I've stayed away from the Madbull unit because it just seems like it's trying to do too many things at once - Tracer unit compatible, with some funky wheel design AND some BB keeper? I've read some stories about feeding issues due to the BB keeper option. Thankfully it's an option so you can just remove the o-ring and it'll act like any other hop-unit. Looking at the unit further, it gives me the same reasons why I stayed away from the King Arms unit - it has random o-rings at the bottom and the rear of the unit - the purpose of those I haven't a clue why. Since when was compression needed between your magazine and the chamber and between the hop unit and the mechbox shell? All the compression happens between the nozzle and hop-up rubber. Lastly there's nothing special about the arm used in the Madbull unit so I see no reason to spend that much especially since I don't run tracer rounds. Thanks for the ideas, I have a better idea what i want to try next, one question though, The little spring that holds back on the hop-up- is it suitable? It seems kind of light to actually do anything

No, I stopped using that crap years ago. O-rings on the inner barrel just in front of the hop-up unit work best, sometimes one or two will work nicely. The desired effect is to put the unit as far back against the mechbox as possible. G&P AEGs now ship without the little spring but instead of o-rings, they give you a spring there. Seems to work OK in a pinch if you can't find o-rings.
