Raw vs Boiled Linseed Oil?
the ics m1 garand i bought had such a light coat of what i believe to be linseed oil that after a day a week of use it has discoloured to almost blonde where i have handled it... im assuming my hand have soaked up oil.. i bought Raw linseed oil nd wiping on but seems to be making it blonded in spots should i be using boiled .. thanx

Raw linseed oil is for keeping the moisture in wood to prevent it from cracking, and repel water. If you use raw oil it can take over a week to dry.
Boiled linseed oil just has drying additives. Might I suggest stripping the stock and using tung oil instead? Tung oil was also used during the manufacture of the M1 so it would be period correct. Tung oil is also much more forgiving to work with. |

yeah i heard that the boiled stuff is harder to work with ? The wood seems to be drinking it fine, its been 3hrs and lots of dry spots... Let me ask this if i went and bought the boilded tm could i just apply over top this coat if dried or wiped ? I jus finish a kar98 witch took me over a month to refinish so strippn down the m1 is out of the question lol

I would just let the raw linseed oil you already have on the rifle sit and dry out over the course of a week. Preferably in a place with not a lot of humidity... Given that you are in Ontario that might be easier said than done.
