Yeah, those are accurate points, and the paintball comment was pretty dumb on my part.
However, when I said "fully penetrate the skin", I meant that a BB traveling at 4.5 joules will not pass all the way through the skin. And if you want to get down to it, I meant the skin and tissue below it. BBs get lodged in earlobes and cheeks and arms all the time, but a spherical BB is going to have problems stabbing all the way through the temple, or punching through the cartilage in your spine. I understand your details, and I don't think we're disagreeing with each other. My point is just that a 4.5 joule BB (assuming it's a .20) is not going to be lethal, and I used an analogy to a paintball in an ignorant way. |

I would imagine a reball hitting your temple might be able to cause enough impact force to give you a short term injury.
4.5j is a lot of force though, that's more than double what most sniper rifles are allowed to shoot. I'm comfortable saying I just don't know what kind of damage that could do. |

My friends sniper rifle after extensive upgrades shot just over 700fps, (.2) He uses .43's. Settled in to just over 600 and after 2 seasons still there. He actually hit his brother in the cheek in a game, he bled and wasn't happy but was o.k. A year later realized pellet was still in his cheek,(thought it was just scar tissue) and had to get it removed. Since that incident He has drastically increased his engagement distance with the thing. Not that he was shooting anyone up close before but now he's extra carefull.

Simunition is 5J at 12ft.
http://simunition.com/upload/documents/doc_94.pdf I can tell you with total certanty that it is extremely unpleasent to be hit with anywhere inside 20yds. There have been lethalities with it in the past and as a result the equipment requirements are rather cumbersome. More importantly airsoft BBs just don't fly that well past 350fps regardless of weight. -Grant |
