Brandon Lee died during a mishap on the set. A scene required a gun to be loaded, cocked, and then pointed at the camera. Because of the close-range of the shot, the bullets loaded had real brass caps, but no powder. After the cut, the props master (not the arms master - he had left the set for the day) dry-fired the gun to get the cock off, knocking an empty cartridge into the barrel of the gun. The next scene to be filmed involving that gun was the rape of Shelly. The gun was loaded with blanks (which usually contain double or triple the powder of a normal bullet to make a loud noise). Lee entered the set carrying a bag of groceries containing an explosive blood pack. The script called for Funboy (Michael Massee) to shoot Eric Draven (Lee) as he entered the room, triggering the blood pack. The cartridge that was stuck in the barrel was blasted at Lee through the bag he was carrying, killing him. The footage of his death was destroyed without being developed. Lee is the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, who died in mysterious circumstances before completing Game of Death (1978). See also Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993).

arman, airsoft guns have been used in movies for quite a while and it is also a way to obtain airsoft guns when you have a movie props license.

For another example, the majority of the weapons used in the TV show "24" are airsoft guns.

EDIT: Before you gain any stupid ideas about the props license: don't even think about it. costs too much and to hard to obtain. I wouldn't want to see another new comer with "crazy loopholes for airsoft guns".

I was very lucky to work with a gun wrangler (Cold Blue rentals) here in Montreal a few years back and got a chance to talk to some of the experts that had the "inside" scoop for the Brandon Lee accident. The story is correct about rigging live rounds to look like dummy rounds, they took off the head of the bullet poured out the powder and recapped the bullet. Only thing was that the primer was still live. Somewhere along the way somebody pulled the trigger and there was just enough power in the primer to knock off the bullet from the round and to get it stuck in the chamber. Next scene comes up and the pull out the "dummy" rounds not noticing the one round missing the bullet, they inserted the blank rounds and continued with the scene. You can do the math as to what happened next. with a round stuck in the chamber and a blank round full of powder.

Thats what I got from IMDB and posted here, with the addition that it was the propsmaster bringing the hammer down by pulling the trigger.
