The short answer to this question is, google.

But I will elaborate a little.
Some shotguns fire 3 bbs at a time. Some simply fire 1.
The down side to using shotguns with shells is the reload Basically picuture each Shell as a mag, and I believe a shotgun can only hold 1 shell at a time. Each shell may only give you about 10 shots before you have to reload with a new shell.
The kind that simple have a smell bb well/mag you simply just pull them out and reload. I have heard that some lower end models suffer from physical failure in the pump, they often break quickly due to to much use.
I sugest attempting to find some reviews on some TM made shotguns.

I been using the TM shotty for well over a year and find them really nice and reliable. Not as flashy and they are ABS, but allot cheaper than the gas ones and they work well in winter.

I have used them outdoors a few times. Not really very effective, but better than a pistol kill if you can actually get someone.

The TM shell is allot easier too use since it's more like a mag for the shotty and they are also cheaper than the gas shells.

In no particular order:

TM SPAS12 (all versions) (springer)
TM Benelli M3 (all versions) (springer)
Maruzen M870 (duster gas)
Maruzen M1100 (not the M1100 "magajine" sawed-off type) full sized version (duster gas)
Tanaka M870 (green gas)
Tanaka M1897 Trench Gun (green gas)
Chinese "Mad Max" double barrel shotgun (although these shells operate more like a MOSCART grenade) (green gas)

The benefits are that they replicate a shotgun much more closely than, say, a Maruzen CA870 or VFC/GB-Tech/G&P versions, which are basically like a pump-action sniper rifle. One bb per shot.

The problem with shells is that they are a) relatively fragile - most will break if you step on them with your full weight; and b) easily lost if you do not stop to pick them up IMMEDIATELY when firing.

Basically, most shotguns will get outgunned outdoors or anywhere where the range is more than 60 feet or so - outside that range, even someone with a pistol has a huge advantage due to rate of fire. Up close and personal, shotguns are awesome, especially if you play indoor CQB. If it's your very first gun, I'd get something not so "niche", but if you're looking for something unique and fun, they fit the bill.

I've had the good luck to play a few games with a highly modified M1100 a few years back (360 fps on compressed air, loading 7 .2's in the shells) and it was freaking AWESOME inside 50 feet - the ability to clear an entire hallway (with an entry stack lined up outside a doorway and no one watching their 6) with 3 or 4 quick pulls of the trigger was pretty impressive.

Yeah, about those...when you pump them repeatedly, they keep loading BBs into the barrel, and when you finally fire, they all spray out in random directions like real shotgun pellets.

...how bad is that for the gun itself?

Ummmm.....my CA870 locks the pump forward after the round is chambered. I only get one shot per pump.

Depending on the model, you may develop issues with the hop up, possibly jam the barrel and have an exponential drop in velocity after each set of rounds chambered.

I know I tried this on my old TM M3, but I can't remember if it allowed me to chamber more than three rounds...
