EAA Zastava project
(xposted from AK Thread)
This mod doesn't look that hard....hmmmm. Structurally it appears far stronger as well. I think I will make this the next project for my ak! I will try and build it in a way that will allow more to be built. A quality furniture grade plywood should provide durability, looks, and ease of manufacturing....hmmm soaked in resin maybe? Or just lots o urathane.... I think wood will add a bit more weight (cause I could do a fiberglass shell instead)....and I wanted more stock room for a larger capacity battery.... So the big question would be whether to build it EXACT to the original....or play with the shape a bit for fun. I have built wood musical instruments(western maple hollowed lyre).....so a custom hollowed stock should be pretty straightforward..... Two part piece....overlapped under thumb hold....eliminate wood tween thumb hole and receiver maybe. Thoughts? Mike. |

I don't own an AK but wouldn't that grip make it hard to put a motor into? The shape itself doesn't look to accommodating. You may have to play with the pistol grip shape a bit to allow for a motor.
I may be totally wrong though.

No, you're totally right. It'd take some creative dremeling to fit the motor, the angle of the grip would have to be greater, and the thumbhole might have to be made a bit further back. It's doable, but could be hard.

You'd have to fudge the shape of the grip a bit, to fit the motor. And you'd probably have to change how the stock attaches to the receiver, because of how you'd have to slide the whole stock/grip over the motor.
The front handguard looks longer than usual, so you'd have to extend the rod on the front trunnion that the exposed portion of the gas tube attaches to. Civvy/Sportster stocks annoy me, on a personal level heh

Good Input all.
I think for my part I am just going to focus on the stock. Proportionally I don't believe the front is any longer. The lower handgaurd DOES look like they remove some material underneath, making it thinner. Regardless, this esthetic is secondary to the challange proposed by the stock design. Good eye though! I didn't pick up on that until you mentioned it. I think a two part design will allow the stock to use the existing method of two tab, three bolt attachment of the stock itself. This is important as this is a fairly strong joint. The lower stock tab joint (two bolt) will call for the elimination of the wood between the thumb hold and the reciever (mentioned earlier). While this WILL affect the hole shape, I will sacrifice that esthetic for retain the strength of stock joint to reciever. How much of the wood must be removed will depend on the thickness of the wood in that area after rounding the wood blank. A small sacrifice to make a AS version. The shape of the grip will indeed be dictated by the v3 mechbox shape. I don't think though, that that final shape will be that differant than what is perposed in the picture....I will post paper pattern with my AK laid over top to determine this. The two pieces will be bolted together after mating to the reciever and mechbox grip. Maybe get some time to play with a paint program as well. Thank you for your time in reviewing this project. -Mikhail. Last edited by Mikhail; October 21st, 2008 at 12:15.. |
