Why exactly is steel preferred to aluminum? I thought aluminum was strong enough.

Alumunum is in a sense, but aluminium is a softer metal, and thus weaker. Steel is stonker and more durable. Real firearms are made of steel for that reason. In airsoft its for the added durability and the additional wieght for realism.

not completely true. there are some grades of steel that are rather soft, softer even than some grades of aluminum.
thats one of my gripes with "steel" in airsoft. most of the time it's mild steel that is used.. i would rather have a carrier made out of light weight 7075 T6 forged aluminum then one of shit steel. for one the rate of fire would be more realistic and the system as a whole would be more gas efficient.
the way i look at it, if it's steel and not hardened, it's a waste of money. level 3 anodized aluminum has a surface hardness of 56+ RC, that harder than some hardened steel.

my RA-Tech steel carrier had the side walls pushed outward, and the underside were it contacts the hammer had been worn into a slot. haven't even put 300 rounds through it.

This one. Most of this GBBR is made out of zinc, except the outer barrel and receiver. Even the stock carry handle is made of zinc, the stock bolt carrier is made of zinc. I'm adding steel parts for the fun of modding this gun. But I love more the stock zinc bolt carrier, the rof is higher then the steel Ra-tech Prime bolt carrier. I also add 4 washers in the stock tube to fasten the rof. And I love the weight of steel againt's zinc/aluminium

I also forgot the VFC steel selector switch and bolt catch. ^^
