How much use has it seen? Probably a broken cold solder joint. lol pun intended.
It's mastercraft. Return it for a new one. Not worth trying to fix or asking for help to fix it. |

I have used it once but during that time it was on for maybe an hour. I will try to return claiming that it wouldn't "bop". I was curious if a damaged tip might cause it to fail.

One thing that may be an issue is if there's some solder left on the tip. Have you tried to leave it on for a while and see if it emits heat of any kind? If it's emitting heat AND there appears to be residue on the tip, wait for it to heat up the residual solder and try to wipe it off on a piece of metal.

I would also suggest; if there is a screw that holds the tip in.. make sure it is tight. A few of mine seems to have this issue. If the screw is loose, it will only heat up a little; if at all.
another suggestion as Juke said is to make sure the tip is clean... another method I suggest is a damp sponge while its hot (if it gets hot); it's what I have used for many years with success good luck... |

And having the tip go funky won't cause the soldering iron to turn on, that's an electrical issue. |
