My first airsoft

Hey there, I just got my first gun today. Can't wait to see whats up in the Toronto region. I used to play paintball a long way back then sold my equipment to switch to airsoft but never did! I am glad I finally did it.

So I got myself a Velocity Arm V1A1. I chose that one b/c I am the type of person that will upgrade everything regardless of the base, so a more expensive one would have been a waste of money for me.

So far I am really happy with it, well built, the plastic seems to be solid as well.
Here is my list of mod I have planned/already bought:
RIS
Vertical Grip
Crane Stock + Rear battery relocation
Holographic sight 551 clone
100mm G&P silencer
Madbull 6.01 Inner barrel
and want to learn and upgrade my gearbox in the near future.

I want to buy a couple more magazines, which one should I get? Hi-Cap, Med, low ? which one you guys like the most?

Hope to see you all soon.

Med or low caps.... Friends don't friends use hi-caps.

The only effective use for high caps? An airsoft theme mexican muchacha band. Hi-Caps AKA tactical Maracas.

Ok now for your gun. A decent choice with KA internals. For the Eotech clone get a hurricane model, its your best bet short of the real thing, for RIS a standard KAC style should do well. Drop the mock silencer for a tracer unit much cooler!

Mid caps work best.

I see what your saying with the rifle, but you should have grabbed something that has a metal receiver, especially if you plan on dumping money into it with upgrades. The va stuff although good ( I got a va36) is still on the lower end quality wise......you have a lot to lean young grasshopper, much to learn.....

Midcap all the way.

Honestly I've never owned a hicap in my life (bought my first rifle used and it didn't come with any mags). I've used them/borrowed them before but all I own are mid (120rds) and lowcaps (75rds) and I see no reason to switch. Just buy them up slowly, it looks like you have a hicap judging from what appears to be a small wheel at the bottom of your rifle so assuming about 300 BB's plus lets say 2 midcaps to start out you've got a little less than 550 BB's in total on your loadout then slowly acquire more midcaps til you think you have a good amount.

Also, I own G&P midcaps which I love to death but that's just one case; you can choose to get those or PTS Pmags (Avoid the Magpul "Green Label" mags at all costs). Also I've seen some of the VFC Metal Midcaps which appear to be solid and pretty good mags as well.

Yea forgot to mention that for upgrades, you should've gotten a King Arms M4 instead, full metal black body and it has amazing internals, currently the most recommend beginner M4

My only experience are with the regular Pmags, never tried the Emags but I don't want to after trying their Pmags. Fed like shit and just weren't that great. I've since switched to G&P metal midcaps and have no complaints.

The only redeeming thing is that if you do the tape/velcro mod that you can get them to feed properly and that they're cheap as hell but I much prefer the standard metal G&P's that I have.

Note, only the more recent full metal FMG1 and FMG2 VA guns have King Arms internals.

The clearsoft ones are JG internals. (I think this is still perfectly acceptable for the price and is just fine for upgrading).

Well, seeing as you're new to airsoft, you're conclusion is totally understandable.
But the unfortunate fact is you went the wrong way about this....

You WANT a good base to start with. A REALLY good base. Not necessarily expensive (the KA M4s are amazing and inexpensive). But having a poor base will affect your internals no matter how good they are.
Just like a car can only ever be as good as it's base. Putting $1.5 million of upgrades into a honda civic will not make it a $1.5 million williams F1.

And upgrading the crap out of a chinese mechbox is like getting maybach to upgrade engine block of your chevy aveo lol

So having an inexpensive gun is FINE to start with, have fun with it. But if you plan to fully upgrade a gun, you may want to get a KA or G&P M4.
But there are things you can do to get the best bang for your buck out of your starter gun;
upgrade your hop rubber
make sure your mechbox seals properly
shim your mechbox correctly
put a new piston head in if possible
use the proper weight of BB for your FPS

These simple things will get some really good performance out of your gun, just don't go spending $400 on a full tune up kit because you won't likely get a $400 difference out of it

For mags I vote 68 round king arms ones. 400 rounds on you is plenty. It forces you to learn how to play rather than rely on ammo amount.

Otherwise I agree with TC above. Enjoy your VA gun, but you should have gone with a higher end base.

Thanks everyone for the inputs, effectively I have so much to learn about airsoft but i am happy with my choice so far.
Thanks ThunderCactus for the detailed "best bang for buck" upgrades
and kalnaren I ll probably go with your recommendation, it make more sense to me to have low/med magazines since you have to reload... after all its a sim right !

I ll test it on the field as soon as I can to see what would suit me the best.

Btw where you guys are playing the most? Also, I live downtown anybody lives here too?

Check out the Ontario Games section of the forum. If you're in the city and want to try out CQB then you should check out the next public game at TTAC3.
