Mod idea: AK74S-U

If you're not familiar with the AK74S-U here's a refresher. Just recall the james bond "Golden Eye". Was contemplating on how to create it; by modifying a TM Beta Spetsnaz or TM AK47S.

-It would require putting a folding stock onto a Beta Spetsnaz - what style? G36/UMP/other tactical folding/?accurate realsteal available?.
-Without a fullstock to house batteries in the Beta, this would require one to modify the power source to either custom batteries held in the handguard (smaller than the AK-S size) or an external battery pack.
-Unique flashhider (comes with TM Spetsnaz(redwolf)).
-As for the wood furniture, questionable if it exist in the beta-style handguard (as it differers from the full sized AK). Or would be more plausible to consider:
-Front end of AKS has accurate furniture style, but large modifications would be need to be done to convert the rifle (AK47) style front into the snub-nosed Beta style. This would also require aquiring a Beta-style front sight.

Another thing to take into account: by modifying the front end of the AKS (by removing a good portion of it). This is a drastic change made to barrel - namely its length. After the work was done, would this hinder the gun to a great degree (due to the nature of the change) - taking into account that range/accuracy would obviously decrease due to the decreased barrel length.

I accept that both cases would require some machining/work: changing the front on the AKS, or the butt on the Beta to take a folding stock + wiring changes.

Was wondering if you had any suggestions/ideas/opinions: is this mod even plausible (functionally)? Which would be easier to convert in your opinion - AK47S or Beta Spetsnaz? Or do you think it's just too much of a hassle!

Or you could just buy the pre-made kit already.

yep.

I know, and take into account that there is a mod available. I'm just trying to be creative to avoid the US $840.00 + shipping for the guarder mod. Things are expensive, I know, but there is always more than 1 way to solve a problem. Was just my idea about how to go about it another way.

Real steel stock can be modded to fit AKS receiver, wood/front part (made by Red Dawn) etc is possible to mod as well. I have one sitting in pieces for some time now, just waiting for a battery which can be fitted inside to arrive.
Modding the stock will cost tons of money or tons of time if you have access to proper tools. Batteries/front set etc will cost money or time as well.
Arnies airsoft has a guide how to convert AKS receiver into something that looks kind of like AKS74U. Once again, it doesn't look like easy mod.

I have a RIGHT Folding Stock (for M4s) I once pondered using for something similar... but its noticeably innacurate.

The receiver hasn't changed, why not just wire it to use a stick batt like the AKS47?

And Marui's Spetsnaz handguards are "wrong" too, so you're back to custom handguards.

like any "shorty" mod, it will, but you can compensate with a few upgrades. The gun won't be worse than a Marui beta Spetsnaz. Even without a power upgrade (given the limited battery size) a TN tightbore inner barrel will help a lot. I did this on my 933, when I shorted the barrel to 11.5" from the M4's 14" and with a stock mechbox I get better performance from the shorter tightbore (so I could have gone shorter and still stayed "at least as good" as the stock M4).

Too much hassle? Thats for you to say. I'm doing a AK-74 conversion myself. I'm being anal and going for the proper notch/stamp on the receiver (instead of the elongated one on Marui's AK47 body).

And personally I'd start with the AK47S since the Spetsnaz receiver is mostly "wrong" anyway (maybe find one for a few parts, like the rear sight)

Its a doable project, but it might get expensive/troublesome, depending on how fussy you are/how accurate you want it to be.

Oh, my bad. Even though it costs a king's ransom I think the Guarder kit would give you the most satisfying results. They are truly worth the money.

I've done this idea myself to a Beta Spetnaz, a AKS metal body and real steel foregrips.

This is the first version, i've since done body mods and am making a triangle folding stock right now. Real steel folders aren't a direct mod but a few folks have made either made a non folding stock out of it or jury rigged something to make it fold (I think Red Dawn has a non folding triangle stock) You can also buy a premade slap on from Trappers Industries in the UK, but they are pretty pricey
The underfolder is correct though for certain models such as a Yugoslavian short AK.
The PBS silencer is hiding a full length AK inner barrel.

The foregrips were very easy to mod, and all that is required is to lengthen the outer barrel from the front section, to do that unscrew the retainer clip, find the length you want a drill a new hole (Part AK-19 btw)
Then mod your wood grips to match.

Body is easy if you follow Arnies guide for the proper dimples. The folding stock is the hardest mod for this gun. I am building one out of Wood and have all the proper measurments of a real one, i'll see how it works out in the end.

you'll also need to rewire the mechbox for a stick battery.

Overall it's pretty cheap compared to the Guarder kits. Sure you won't get the full on realism but then again your not paying $900 for a parts kit.

Gish that's a nice mod.

I just looked up the dimple/AKSU body article on Arnie's. Its a bit sparse, unfortunately. I was hoping for a better way to do the notches Dunno how fussy/detailed I'll get about the receiver otherwise (bolt placement and stuff).

The biggest task ahead is carving myself a proper stock over the winter months. (desired result, sorry don't mean to threadjack)

For the stock, you can see in this web:
http://www.trapperindustries.com/airsoft/page12.html
To more battery, it´s necessary install the metal front set and make various modifications, in my ak47s and my ak spetsnaz S I have installed the metal front set.
When you have install the metal front set, you must make this modificatios in the gun:
