gears not spinning freely

Hey guys, I am currently working on upgrading my classic army p90 proline. I have had it for over 5 years now and this is the first time i've opened the gearbox, and this will be my first full overhaul of a gun. In the past I have found that the battery drained to quickly, and the gun sounded a little laboured, so I decided it is time to crack it open and make it sing.

I've disassembled and cleaned everything and I began the shimming process, and immediately discovered a problem. when I try to spin the gears, there is suddenly resistance. It's mostly when the sector gear reaches a certain point but not every time. I can force it past with a little effort but it can't be good.

To be clear, I have already removed the cut off lever. Literally the only thing on/ in or around the shell are the gears and bushings (which are brand new modify stainless steel bushings). I've tried with the stock shims, no shims and fully shimmed, and I still have the same problem. I've tried the original bearings and the new bushings (glued in); same thing. I've done all my tests with all of the screws in and the box fully assembled, and spaced using the motor cage to ensure it is not over tightened. in fact i still have the problem when I am only using finger pressure to hold the box together. I've tested each individual gear and they all spin freely by themselves. bevel to spur spins freely, but spur to sector does not, so the issue has something to do with the meshing of the spur and sector gears In my opinion.

How can I alleviate this problem?

Check if you have debris between the teeth.

Bent gear axle?
Mechbox bushing holes out of alignment?
Try a different gear set?

I've inspected the teeth with a fine tooth comb (and actually cleaned them with a tooth brush to be sure) and they are good.

After reading this, I put a different sector gear in and still had the same problem. Then I put a different spur gear in and the problem was even worse. Then I took all of the gears from the p90 and put them in the G36 gearbox and tested them and they worked fine. I guess that means the wholes are out of alignment.

I will pick up a new shell and let you guys know how it went. Thanks for the Help!

CA gear axles are made of cheese. Every set I've had in a stock gun, they didn't last long, an axle would bend and the gears would bind maybe once every few cycles. Changing one gear and still seeing the issue doesn't do you any good if 2 gears have bent axles, which is possible, once the gearbox binds and stops mid cycle you can bend the next weakest point.

swapping them into another gearbox is just hiding the issue of bent axles. The axle spacing from one gearbox to the next is not guaranteed to be the same. you're talking a fraction of a mm here and a fraction there will cause them to bind.

The other possibility is that a gear face is out of round. It could be more elliptical than round. I've seen gears have faces that also wobble on the spin axis, meaning the axle is not perpendicular with the gear faces.

If the gears shafts are bent in one mechbox, they're going to be bent in the other mechbox, too.
Just have to shim them to check, but honestly with stock CA parts you might as well just buy a new shell and gears instead of wasting time inspecting things lol

Buy a new gearbox for your gun and problem solve...

That's what i do if 1 to 3 times doesn't solve the problem.

because spending 120$ when you only need to spend 60 labor included makes more sense.

hey guys, i got my new shell, unfortunately (or fortunately, after the fact) it used 8mm bushings as opposed to the 7mm bushings that i had bought already for the old shell. any ways all said and done, its all good now, i've assembled the new set up and it works great. i did however get the wrong air nozzle, so im still messing around with that since i glued it to the tappet plate. but that's another story, we got'er beat anyways, thanks for your help guys!
