web gear for FN C1

does anyone know if the CF used the 82' web pattern for the FN
and just changed the mag pouches to C7 mag pouches?.
if so,does anyone where the FN mag pouch can be found?.

You nailed it..when we first got the 82 Pattern Web Gear they issued us Mag pouches specifically made for the FN C1a1. When the C7 came into the system new Mag pouches came right along with them. I am sure there are C1 mag pouches still out there in the Surplus stores etc.

How can you tell the pouches apart? I remember there's long ones, short ones, and then short ones with grenade loops...

That would probably be it. Best I can tell the short pouches are for the C1, the long pouches the C2, and the short pouches with grenade loops are for the C7.

There's was 3 types of mag pouches released for the 82 pattern webbing
1) Short and fat sort of square looking with no grenade loops = FN
2) Long and thinner with no grenade loops = C7
3) Long and thinner with grenade loops = C7
It's pretty easy to spot the FN ones because of there square look.
Hope this helps

nope, but as jakster pointed out they were put out in both varieties (I just don't have any on hand to compare sizes, so I was going off memory and the Canadian Soldier website).

The FNC1 and FNC2 Mag pouches are obviously wider and thicker than the C7 mag pouch. The C2 Pouch is also Taller than the C7 pouch, as it was a straight 30rd box mag.

Hey Bud!!

Last September my team and I made the trek out to Toronto for OP Border Wars II. Before the OP, we tinkered around in Toronto for a few days visiting most of the Surplus Stores.

All of them had components of the 82 Pattern Web-Gear to varying degrees, and some had actual sets put together. Granted, not many were correctly assembled or with all of the standard pouches - but not everyone had the benefit of going to battle school right?

Anyhow, as our team uses the 82 pattern Web-Gear, we noticed quite quickly that there was one store in particular that carried a lot of the older 82 Pattern gear, such as C2 mag pouches, and the SMG mag pouches - and that most of the pouches they carried were never issued and looked brand new (yay - no broken plastic clips for holding the stuff onto the web belt!!). Hell, they even had the 82 Pattern holsters for the Browning 9 Mil. Anyhow, the store I'm referring to was "Save More Sports Store", at 114 Queen St. East.

There was another Surplus store north of Save More on Younge Street, called "Central Surplus". They had a lot of pieces of web-gear, though at a glance the only older pieces we saw was one or two SMG mag pouches.

Most of the other pouches there appeared to be C7 pouches, but admittedly, we didn't look closely at the pile of pouches in the back with the exclusive purpose of determining whether we were looking at C7 or FN C1/C2 mag pouches.

Anyhow, either place was a bit pricey, but they do have what you're looking for (particularly Save More).

Ideally, if you or someone you know could go down there, then you'll be able to piece together what you need and ensure it's serviceable. But, if you're only looking for a pair of C1 or C2 pouches for instance - then I'd go with Save More only because their stuff appeared new, so it should be less likely to have any defects/broken parts etc.

Anyhow - hopefully that helps.

Cheers!!
Brian

If you are going for the authentic look of the CF during the FN C1A1/C2A1 era, then you need to get the 1964 pattern webbing. The 64 pattern used velcro loops to secure pouches to the web belt and there was a Y-strap type yoke almost like the vietnam style American webbing. Oddly enough, there wasn't any magazine pouches for the webbing. There was a grenade pouch (that could be carried in two different positions), a mess tin pouch (precourser to the utility pouch), gas mask carrier, and two different sized general purpose pouches that guys used for magazines and spare ammunition.

If you find some and get it together, I'd really reccommend using gun tape to hold the pouches and straps on. The first time I ever wore that stuff it flew apart doing my first section attack.

OK here's some links, pictures and reminiscing from the early 80s with the Bugtussle Fusiliers.

64 pattern had no mag pouches, no one wore anything except a mess tin carrier stuffed with rain gear and a canteen carrier. In the field you'd add a bayonet and frog, and in some cases sneak some Bren gun pouches on as they were a good fit & nicer to use than the C2 bra or a US Alice clip butt pack. The fatal flaw was as you'd add extra pouches to this gear the Velcro would blow.

You carried seven 20 rounds mags normally for a C1. Six in your pockets and one on the weapon. The stuff was made for Mechanized Infantry who would be fighting the Warsaw Pact armies in Germany. Everything you didn't need was kept in the carrier. Bit of a hassle for patrolling on foot.

The 82 stuff was much better but did take some time to trickle down to all and sundry. The pouches wouldn't move, it was wider and more comfortable with padded suspenders that aren't in any of the pictures I found. You did get mag pouches for the C1 at this point and the pics are from Marstar where they have them for sale.

The thumbnails are 64, 82, C1 pouch for 82, C7 pouch for 82.
