Type 0,1,2..etc Cylinder Question

What is the point of holes in the cylinders?
Wouldnt an AEG lose air compression with a hole making losing FPS?
Is the real reason just to drop FPS or its not that at all?

Just some quick questions for the mind to sooth its inquisitivness.

Thanks again.

It's to increase shot consistency, reduce impact on the gearbox, reduce the air volume and increase ROF. It doesn't have much to do with FPS.

Short-barreled guns do not require such large air volumes. By reducing the air volume to only the forward portion of the cylinder, you get crisper shots out of the barrel, where the spring is travelling at its fastest.

Also, if you have a sealed cylinder, the BB exits the inner barrel during the first half of the piston travel. The second half of the travel becomes unrestricted, and when the piston head slams shut, you experience a partial dry fire. This is half of why you need to match cylinders to barrel length.

The long answer is here: http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=18038

Short answer is that because of different barrel lengths, you need to push an optimum amount of air to properly propel the BB out of the barrel. With a short barrel and a "full" or type-0 cylinder, the BB exists the barrel well before the piston has fully accelerated, resulting in lower FPS. With a long barrel and a cylinder with a hole too far back, not enough air is pushed to get the BB out, and you get extremely low FPS.
