Gun paint - Glossy
So, I had my AK flat black. Repainted gloss black (in both cases using Krylon) to hope for a more "blued" look. Turned out too black. I want a grayish black look, but glossy. Or better yet grayish with a hint of blue even... I want it to look like blued steel, as close as possible with aluminum and spray paint...
Any tips? Thanks, Cheers, Alex

I think it is possible to find the paint colour "gun blue" at Canadian tire or hobby shop then spray gloss clear if you want on top. I know they have gun paints at places like Lebarons but I think that is for metal. ie metal guns.

Thats the thing. The parts I'm painting are aluminum, and Gun Blue kits are for bluing steel. I believe it only works on steel due to some sort of "oxidizing" process or something along those lines...
Sigh, I wish I had an Inokatsu or Guarder AK... Anyone else?

Try airbrushing a tiny little bit of metallic blue on the gun before painting it black? Not everywhere, maybe just a little patch here and there to simulate the realistic look. I dunno if this'll work, but I guess it might be worth a try.

Well for the not to glossy black look.
Use the matt black krylon and then give it a quick once over with a light gloss when its dry. Or theres only one good coat of black and a half coat of blue...I dont know how well that would work though, best to test on a piece of cardboard first.

I used benjamin moore flat black their high end stuff to paint the flash hinder from my RK104 and it is the same color as the barrel...you cannot tell them apart...you can the add a light gloss spray afterward to have a little glossy sheen ... you can spray anytype of surface, also it is a combine primer and finisher in one step...

And on, I don't want to make "patches", a proper coat is what I'm looking for...

the name of the type is UTILAC SPRAY ENAMEL from Benjamin Moore you can find these at your local Benjamin Moore paint retailers across canada, they are well known here in BC for the high quality paint...very expensive paint, well you get what you pay for... here is a link to find a store near you http://www.benjaminmoore.ca/locator/...serLanguage=en if you go to the store and just say the color you want to acheive and type of material you are painting, they will guide you to the right product and they might be able to custom make the color for you...maybe bring a sample of the color from a book or something...but please do not bring you gun at the store, unless you want money and free paint I just said I was painting clear acrylic and also I wanted to paint a scrached up steal barrel from my hunting rifle (he was not a animal activist...thank goodness) here is the description of the paint I got... http://www.benjaminmoore.ca/pdfs/tds/nonav/en/490.pdf Last edited by leblanc74; November 15th, 2007 at 01:41.. |

So attempting full black and half coating/ partial coating with dark glossy blue could do it.

Oh no, do the full matt black, then only a little glossy blue
Something like this I guess. Sorry about the quality, I did it in MS paint.

Thank you for the info guys, will have to look into all of that. I'm also waiting for results on an experiment from someone here on ASC - mixing spray paint (literally can to can), gloss black with some blue. Sounds like the way to go.
I had problems with the paint going on unevenly/bubbly even, onto my receiver, perhaps I should "prime" it with a coat of flat black first. Cheers, Alex
