Looks like a CA249 gearbox to me, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I read a few reviews on the star 249 and it doesn't look like anyone has had trouble with the gearbox shell itself, just the parts contains therein.

+1 CA M249 MBs. They don't break

Yes agree with Cactus, CA internals are not that great. I would even say the quality of the M249 MB is not the best but its just so damn thick. The nice thing about CA is that everyone carries there stuff and its not hard to find individual gears if you only strip one.

I would focus on a ROF of 25rps depending on your FPS limits. That ROF is about 50% greater than most AEGs on the field and its not unpractical. Most stock guns run from 15-18rps on an large 8.4v. Test yours by using these instructions. http://www.airsoftmechanics.com/home...nt/view/24/30/ A 9.6v large type battery will usually give you +2rps. Helical standard gears and a high performance motor will help. A mosfet would be ideal for this setup as well. It will increase ROF by 20-30% by improving efficiency. A light piston and large bearings will help too.

I try to keep my ROF as close to M4s as possible, you know, like the real M249?

The CA249 mechbox is more or less a solid block of metal. It's like 90% metal and 10% space for your internals . Seriously though, it accounts for like 1/5th of the weight of the CA249, and given that the CA249 is itself a massive piece of metal, thats saying something.

Anyways the CA249 box isn't going to break anytime soon. However, its hard to say if its due to the sheer thickness of the thing or due to the design (I'm inclined to go with the former). Having said that, the Star M249 mechbox is plastic (and clear plastic at that ) and may be plauged with all the structural issues of your regular V2 mechbox.

Oh, and regardless of which 249 you choose, make sure you can fit a full sized 9.6v battery in there. If your a SAW, your gun will see plenty of trigger time. Having a high ROF won't hurt either.

Upgrade those gears too. I didn't bother with heavy spring upgrades. Generally, with a fast firing weapon, you'll want to focus on efficiency and air compression rather than high power.

I don't get why people want to make ROF monsters of 25RPS+

It's harder on your gun.. and it's just as effective of suppressing people as something shooting 10RPS... + you go through a metric shit tonne of BB's already.. why waste more?

I commend you for trying to keep airsoft in the reals of a simulation. I think airsoft can offer a lot to law enforcement and military training where simmunitions are not appropriate. The M249 and the M4 do have a rate of fire of 700 to 1000 rpm. This is roughly stock performance. How would you upgrade your M249, just durability (swap parts) and 60FPS (to ~400FPS)?

Its ok if you don't get it. This is the upgrade/mod section though. There is a tactical advantage to higher volumes of fire. There is a fear affect generated by ROF monsters much like the whistle of a .3 at 450FPS. SAWs are expensive and, yes, buying more BBs or parts to support a higher ROF system would come with the territory. The parts issue might turn some people away but some people really enjoy this side of airsoft.
