V2 Mechbox Questions

I was wondering what is the best/strongest V2 mechbox that can be fitted with a modify gearset (I know the "reinforced" mechboxes cannot).

Also, are there any other design flaws (besides the weak structure near the front end that constantly breaks)? Is a V2 mechbox a good platform in general (besides this flaw mentioned above). I'm looking at getting one CNC'd and was wondering if it's worth bothering looking into or if I should bite the bullet and buy a PTW.

Cheers,

Mark

Go with a PTW... a V2 will always break i was told. Reinforced one just means it takes longer to break.

PTW MAX (pre-assembled).

Honestly, you're looking at something that will never fail (with proper maintenance), and something that will eventually fail, and cost alot of money to rebuild.. The choice is pretty obvious.

No, I don't want to use a pot metal V2. I want to know if I should bother looking into having one CNC'd out of stainless steel or a high grade aluminum which should solve the breakage problem. If I could afford a PTW right now I'd have one. Unfortunately buying text books and tuition is where most of my money goes for now.

They're still pretty pricey and need a lot of modification and know-how to install/modify.

Please guys, all I'm looking for is if a V2 mechbox is a good platform (besides breaking) and if so which should I bother looking to get CNC'd that can accept modify gearsets. I'm going to look into pricing of having one machined here after finals.

Many people have beefs with V2s, Im ok with them really. Ive upgraded my TM v2 and downgraded it and upgraded it and down graded it, and have swapped out many parts and its seen many miles as well. Have not had a failure to date yet, that is not to say that it will not happen but someday.

My only beef with my v2 is that its a pain in the ass to get out of my m4, both of them. Id ptw, but Im not a fan, its not cause of the cost or anything, its more than acceptable considering its quality. Just not my scene thats all.

If you already got the gears I say throw them in now and enjoy yourself, worry about things later. Heck for all you know, you may quit airsoft or sell your aeg before anything ever happens.

But if you have to get something reenforced, I think ILLusion had something for sale that may be appropriate to your needs.

u put through like 5000bb then sell it, that is the best way to avoid breaking if u get a re-enforced one lol
but make u sure u put that it in a really used condition if u do

I have seen more than a few V2 mechboxes firing over 400fps with more than 10 000 rounds through them, with no sign of gearbox shell failure, sure maby a piston here or there.
I am refering to TM and classic army.

Theres a guy in Manitoba who's a hose, goes through atleast 5 bags of ammo per game. He uses a G&P 249 at 400fps (doesn't play with MAA), and he's gone though 400,000 rounds so far at the very least and STILL hasn't broken his mechbox shell.
In comparison, I was using a G3 that had been upgraded to 365fps for about 8 months before the Tokyo Marui stock mechbox shell broke. Come to think of it, the only gearbox shells I've ever seen break were TMs.
The G&P or Guarder reinforced shells are the way to go, tough as nails, I put my full confidence being those shells.

My son has a G&P M16A3 with over 17,000 rounds through it. We had it apart after around 14,000 rounds to lube it, and there was no signs of problems with the gearbox.

G&P Reinforced shells are good, but they'll crack eventually. I have trouble believing 400,000 rounds with out the box cracking, because even a V3 would probably start showing signs of stress at that many rounds. However I'd still attest that if you're running a v.2 mechbox gun, that the G&P shells are king, second only to the pro-win.

If you're able to do the modifications and work necessary to build and maintain a v.2 box, then the pro-win is not that far out of reach. The pro-wins big advantage over the v.2 is not just durability, but meshing of the hop-up unit to prevent air loss. So if you have the funds, and the time ((its winter, down season, time to start crackin' guns open)). Another nice advantage to the pro-win is that it will get rid of the need for that gear module set you're thinking of. The pro-wins come in split mechbox designs, that do exactly that, hold the gears together and let you take the upper to switch out springs. And since spring swapping is pretty much what that gear module is intended for, pro-win really takes the cake on what you're after. Plus, Illusion has these, at $280 I think, which is not bad. And sounds to me like you already have the rest of the parts you need for it.

People have jumped the band-wagon of PTW for life, because it makes sense. You have a gun that is top of the line, the most accurate airsoft device there is, and costs only a little more than building a supreme device from scratch. And to top it off, taking this thing out of the box, out ranges just about any bolt action rifle ((gas or bolt at field legal FPS)) there is out there, and just about every AEG as well. Bang for buck, PTW really does take it. Its just that insane price tag to begin with that really offsets people from nabbing one, and I don't blame those people either.
