CA AR-10 as a first AEG?
So I was considering a scar for my first AEG but for some reason, the more I look at them, the more I get turned off by it's looks (I think the butt reminds me of an m60 butt and it turns me off). Having been in the reserves the draw is there for a c9/m249 which I used to carry but I don't think it would be a good AEG to start skirmishing with.
M16's and m4's are way too common for me (yes, I like being different). I don't want something small, I actually want something larger (I am not a small guy). Then I stumbled onto the CA AR-10. Larger size and weight: check less common : check sexy looks : check tactical rails to add toys/accessories: check semi and full auto: check right out of the box it appears to have almost everything I want. It can take a grenade launcher for more of an assault type roll (or look) can take scopes if I want to try to convert it to more of a DMR can take an aimpoint for regular days. Is CA a good make for a newb? will I have issues getting parts for it if things break? will I have issues upgrading it later (should I choose) the only accessory I'm concerned about are mags, are there any mid or low caps available? I didn't see any on the CA website and have no clue about compatibility.

CA is a good make for anybody.
Parts are easy to get, you may just have to wait a week or two. You shouldn't have any issues upgrading it later. A SPR M16 type might be better for starting as it is more common, which is a good thing in itself. A M14 might be an excellent choice as well if your a bigger guy. |

CA is a great brand but the price tag normally reflects that.
Mags will be compatible with just about any brand and AR parts are just about 100% universal fit. They are easy guns to work on. That said Finding a AR10 in Canada may take some work. First you will need to get age verified. There is a thread in the FAQ that explains the process. After that you will have access to the classifieds and retailers. |

Is CA a good make for a newb?
Yes, I'd say so for vast majority of their stuff. will I have issues getting parts for it if things break? Short of breaking the receiver, no. will I have issues upgrading it later (should I choose) No, and it should already have a good number of internal upgrades.

Unless I change my mind again and go with an m14 as tankdude suggested (something I already considered)

I wouldn't get an AR-10...
Get something that takes standard magazines so in a pinch you'll be able to use some of your friend's / squadmates magazines. |

I wouldn't rule the M14 out just yet. It's more common than the AR10, but at least mags aren't as hard to find.
http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/gandp-sr2...-sr25-aeg.html I think those would work, but I've had a really bad experience with G&P mags so I'm highly suspicious of them.

If you really like the look of the AR-10 and want to stick with CA then try the SPR. Basically an M16 with a cut down BUIS and an M5 rail on the front. Mags are easy as hell to find and you can still attach....well pretty much anything you can think of with plenty of room. I stuck a Crane stock on the end of mine, now it's actually a few inches longer than before.

CA is a great first gun. You won't regret it at all. But I would look more into an M15 rifle or carbine instead of the AR-10 if for no other reason than the mags are much easier to find. It sucks to have a great gun but not have enough mags for it. If you're planning on gaming, many games won't allow hi cap mags like that come with the gun. You'll need several mags in order to play. And as mentioned, if you have standard mags, you can always share between squadmates like Amos said.

Honestly, that gun looks very cool and is a good brand. I say go for it if you can afford it. You can't go wrong with CA. The only downside about that is that it takes slightly harder to find mags. But you should be able to find spares for sure. Kindof makes me wish i would have got this instead of my CA m15a4......

hmm, well thanks for all of the feedback. Thankfully nothing is on order so it is never too late to change my mind. I think I might go the m14 route before an m16/ar15, if anything because it is a little less common (star makes some that are sexy as hell).
I think I'm scared if I go M14 I'll be tempted to try to turn it into a sniper rifle off the bat which wouldn't be a good thing to start with... decisions, decisions, decisions.... how the hell did you all decide on your first AEG?? It is hard as hell.

I decided by looking into what would suit / fit me best, factoring in if I wanted all sorts of doo-dads hanging off of it or what not then lurking the classifieds until something along the lines I wanted popped up for cheap. And I mean CHEAP...every couple of days someone will post an AEG for sale that's honestly a steal...provided you have the cash on hand.

If you get an M14 make sure it's a TM or a CA... I haven't had good experiences with the G&G one

I chose my first guns based on a couple of ways. First was based on real steel guns I'd fired before. Based on that, I knew the Armalite family was something I was very comfortable with, hence my choice of the CA M15 rifle as my first real AEG. It's a design that I find very ergonomic and I'm comfortable using. My size allows me to easily handle a full-size rifle. And now I also have the C8A2 and HK416 and I love them all.
And same for my first GBB. I fired several different models of real steel pistols and revolvers over the years, so I already knew my favourite was the Beretta 92 FS / M9, so it was a no brainer to go that route.
