Power out of an AEG

Talking to an RCMP Officer about airsoft today and this topic came up.

Do you think it's possible to get an AEG to fire at 790 FPS? I know that this would make an AEG a firearm, a fully automatic firearm, in the eyes of the law which is a PROHIBITED firearm.

This is one of the main reasons that this particular officer is afraid of concerning our sport.

It can be easy for a Gas "Sniper" rifle to be upgraded to those speeds but that would just make it a normal "firearm" and would need to be registered.

No idea on full automatic gas Carbines or assault rifles and I didn't bring this fact up.

But this officer is worried about the AEG's (his son is getting into airsoft and the officer likes the idea but the legal aspect for him is worrying being an peace officer) and asked me if it's possible. I've never heard of it done (who would be stupid enough to admit it) but I couldn't even tell him if it was possible.

You can do it if you meld springs together.

Classic guns might have the required power source.

Yeah the M4 I used to game had settled down to 450fps with .2's after a simple upgrading. 500 wouldn't have been to hard to reach but being 500fps does NOT make it a firearm though.

If my math is correct an airsoft gun has to reach 790fps with .20 BB's to surpass the 5.7 joule limit to make it firearm. 790fps with .20 equals 5.77 joules.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's possible to build many things into firearms, it's just a matter of time, effort, skill and resources. If you actively inquire about it, eventually someone's going to do it (if only as a highly customized one-of, since no generic mechbox and internals will reliably survive in that velocity range) because of the interest surrounding the issue.

If you leave it alone, it's less likely to entice someone into trying.

I question how many shots you'd get off with a 790 FPS gun.

In Denmark, guys have been running PTWs at 600-700 fps. I would imagine that it would be hard on the system over time, but it would last for awhile.

A gas gun is a different story, much more potential with less stress on the system.

I see where this discussion is going. But just as an FYI, the RCMP has unilaterally prohibited the Type 97 because it can be converted to full-auto. What they aren't telling you is it took 5 firearms experts, gunsmiths and a machinist 3 weeks with unlimited resources to do it. No simple John Q. Public is ever going to be able to do that. The Type 97 is still prohibited, even though many made it into Canada as non-restricted, and a court case is pending.

While not impossible to do, it will neither be easy (accessible) nor will it be cheap to acquire the parts required to do so.

It's easier to do on classic (gas) airsoft guns, but they are hard to find these days.

And while AEGs are easy to find, the user would literally have to gut the entire gun and rebuild the entire internal assembly, wiring and power supply structure with all top shelf high grade mechanical componentry to take that type of stress - plus the addition of other circuitry (MOSFETS) to handle current loads that high.

Ya think?

But that's not the point, it's about how hard it is to turn something into a FULL AUTO firearm (technically).

Let's put it this way: manufacturing automatic firearms is an indictable offence. Requesting information/advice on illegal activities is against ASC rules. This thread is over.
