Scratch built AR, Need a mechbox: modify vs. Systema vs. ??

Well, I'm almost done my first scratch build, all i need is a mechbox.

I am trying decide on what brand to follow.

I have always been a fan of modify parts, esspecially their modular gear sets, and now that they have a mechbox case out, i could build a mechbox from a smooth FTK plus a few other parts pretty easily.

Systema is supposedly one of the best parts makers out there, but i have never used any of their internals.

What would you do? Build a modify box for +/- $350? Or buy a systema drag n' drop box for a little over 200? Is it worth the extra hundred and a bit bucks for modify parts?

Thanks guys,

-Ben

what brand of metal body are you using is the first question.

compatibility comes first.

King Arms, Sorry should have added that,

From what i have read, king arms bodies are designed to work perfectly with TM, KA and systema boxes, However, i was wondering if anyone has tried one with a modify box

Front end is build mostly from a Huang MK18 rail, and it has a crane stock.

Ill post pics when its done

use Systema. Their more guaranteed to fit and make a proper seal with proper positioning like the manufacture tells you so.

or you can be the first one on the planet to try out Modify gearbox on King Arms metal body. And see how that goes.

Maybe i will do modify internals in a systema shell.

Are systema drag n' drop complete mechbox's any good?

they are pretty good actually. all the parts are high quality.

Just take it to a gun doc first to get it reshimmed and regreased. But that isn't TOO necessary. Ones I've seen had fairly good shimming.

Well, all of their rear/wired box's have un ported cylinders so I would have to open it up to change that anyways.

Plus, they come with M120 springs, and that would probably give me far too much FPS with a tighbore.

probably hit you around 420FPS if it makes a proper seal with the hop up unit/rubber.

Yar, and I'm shooting for 370ish.

I guess ill switch it up for a M100 or maybe a M110.

I think I could probably shim it okay, I'm not too bad at shimming.

As for regreasing, thats the one part of mechbox work im kind of unsure about. Is there a guide somewhere that can explain what greases to use where?

ahh, watch any mechbox.com videos of upgrading a gearbox. It touches on where to put grease. You only need to put gear grease on the gear teeth. Silicone grease on the rail of the piston and the O-ring of the piston. Also a little layer of silicone grease inside the cylinder would help as well.

Go for a M110. It might shoot 380 or even 390 at first, but it will settle to 370 eventually. After a game or two.

nope, but I'm sure it will do fine. It's just grease after all anyway.

airmail is pretty cheap from ehobby. It's only like $4 for the grease set for shipping.
