AK S.A.W. project

hey everybody

I would like to start a project on my AK, something along the lines of a squad automatic weapon, like the AK equivalent of the Shrike M4. Right now I have a somewhat modified AK Beta (it's an AK Beta which will have a Romanian folding stock and metal receiver in a couple days).

My first ideas were to buy a Drum mag, but I still have no idea what to put on the front handguard rail (launcher or vert grip). I dont know either if I should add a longer barrel hidden by a silencer or just a normal flash hider.

Also, if I wanna upgrade it earlier, what would the best upgrades be?

anyways, what are your thoughts

For upgrades, you would definitely need stronger gears and a metal-toothed piston and alot more if you want a support weapon. Im no expert so if anyone can correct me or add to it, please do so

Well technically the SAW equiv for the AK family would be an RPK or RPK-74.

If you want to "Westernize" it with rails and stuff... I guess thats what you need to see.

No, no metal toothed pistons.

You want the piston to be the weak point of the build, because it's always easier to replace a $20 piston than it is to replace a $100 gear set

Issn't the RPK more like the M60 equivalent? I'm looking for something more compact

You won't be allowed to play alot of fields with a drum mag unless you have a real full conversion, It's just unfair to the other guys.

The RPK and RPD are the S.A.W. of Russia. Look at the size of a M249, an RPK isn't much bigger... (Much less bulky, but a little bit longer)

oh well I guess my choice of words wasnt really appropriate. I really am looking for a compact SAW based on my AK Beta with romanian folding stock. Anything really to fit the support fire role in which I would like to play

Beta and Support don't go together. Yes you could make it work but it'd be stupid and most scenarios wouldn't let you use a highcap or a drum mag in anything base on a Beta especially with a folding stock. That's just a bb hose.

I understand. It's a shame because I always liked the Shrike but never gotten around buying an M4 and now that I have an AK it'd have been awesome. I guess i'll try and find another project that would be interesting.

If you want an eastern bloc support weapon, check out the RPD;

A retailer on the boards might be able to bring one in for you.
